While the theme parks at Walt Disney World have many great restaurants, don’t overlook the dining possibilities at the Disney resort hotels. Here are my top 5 restaurant choices outside the Disney parks.

1. Boma – Located at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, Jambo House, this family restaurant serves both breakfast and dinner, buffet style. Inspired by African cultures and influences, Boma allows the guest to experience tastes from this foreign land, such as Bobotie (corn beef, eggs, cream, potatoes and onions) and Durban Style Roasted Chicken. Don’t worry if you or your children are not adventurous eaters. There are plenty of standard American options available such as eggs/bacon/sausage for breakfast and seafood/pork/beef for dinner. Be sure to try the Zebra Domes for dessert. Prices range from $20-$43 for adults and $12-$20 for children, depending on the season. Tip: After your meal, head out back of the resort to view the live animals roaming the savannas that surround this beautiful resort.

2. Ohana – ‘Ohana means family! This popular restaurant is located at Disney’s Polynesian Resort. Breakfast is a character meal, featuring Lilo and Stitch. The Hawaiian-style dinner features live entertainment with a ukulele player, singers and coconut races for the kids. Come hungry because the pork loin, steak and shrimp never stop! Prices range from $36-$43 for adults and $18-$20 for kids.

3. California Grill – After undergoing a recent refurbishment, California Grill remains a popular dining destination for both quality California cuisine and a great location. Sitting atop Disney’s Contemporary Resort, California Grill offers stunning views of Seven Seas Lagoon and the Magic Kingdom. Although the restaurant welcomes families, it is a bit more adult-oriented in atmosphere and food choices. Menu items include flatbreads, sushi, pork, steak and seafood. If you are on the Disney Dining plan, this restaurant charges two table-service credits. Tip: Book your reservation about an hour before the scheduled Wishes fireworks show at the Magic Kingdom. You’ll be able to enjoy your dessert while watching the show.

4. Beaches and Cream – Disney recently upgraded this fun restaurant to a table-service venue. You can now book your reservation up to 180 days out from your vacation. Beaches and Cream is a 1950’s-style soda and burger shop, located at the Beach Club Resort. It is small and somewhat noisy, but the food is tasty, if not necessarily healthy. Entrees are $15 and under. Save room for dessert-the ice cream selections are plentiful! Tip: If you’re with a group, try the Kitchen Sink for dessert. It’s massive!

5. Trail’s End – Although a bit out of the way, this hidden gem serves tasty comfort food at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campgrounds. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this restaurant is a great value. Buffet prices range from $18-27 for adults and $11-$16 for kids. Tip: After your meal, spend some time exploring the campgrounds, including the Tri-Circle-D Ranch.
