Frozen Hot Chocolate

I LOVE this Frozen Hot Chocolate recipe. I used to get these drinks from Dairy Queen in high school and now I can make them at home!

Ingredients

  • 5 oz chocolate we like Marabou from Ikea and/or a few different kinds of Ghiradelli
  • 2 tsp hot chocolate powder mix I like to use Stephens-brand hot chocolate mix
  • 1 1/2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 cups ice to make it a little more rich, use frozen milk cubes
  • whipped cream for serving
  • Chocolate shavings for serving

Equipment

  • Blendtec Blender

Method

  1. Step 1: Chop the chocolate into small pieces. Melt in a double boiler or by microwaving for 30 seconds at a time, stirring between each time, until fully melted.
A glass bowl filled with chopped milk chocolate sits on a white surface. Surrounding the bowl are pieces of chocolate, a silver measuring spoon, and a checkered cloth. In the upper left corner, an unwrapped chocolate bar featuring a logo is partially visible.
  2. Step 2: Add the hot chocolate mix and sugar to the melted chocolate. Stir until blended.
A bowl of melted chocolate with piles of granulated sugar and cocoa powder on top. A blue and white checkered towel is partially visible next to the bowl. The bowl is placed on a white surface.
  3. Step 3: Slowly add half a cup of the milk, and stir until smooth.
A bowl of frothy hot chocolate is placed on a white surface near pieces of dark chocolate and a white bowl containing cocoa powder. A blue and white checkered cloth is partially visible in the background.
  4. Step 4: In a blender, place the remaining cup of milk, the chocolate mixture, and the ice. Blend on high speed until smooth.
A blender container filled with ice cubes, viewed from above. In the background, slightly out of focus, there is a bowl of a brown powdery substance, a bar of chocolate, and a teal and white checkered cloth on a white surface.
  5. Step 5: Pour into cup or mug and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
Three mason jars filled with a layered chocolate beverage are topped with generous swirls of whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Two metal spoons, a bowl of cocoa powder, and a chocolate bar are placed around the jars, with a blue plaid cloth nearby.
