In 2023, Marvel gave its Ultimate Universe a soft reboot, breathing new life into the alternate universe first introduced in the Ultimate Marvel comics line, which ran from 2000 to 2015.

Spearheading this fresh chapter is the powerhouse duo of Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch, whose “Ultimate Invasion” set the stage for this next Multiverse journey. Fans can now dive into ongoing series like “Ultimate Spider-Man,” “Ultimate Black Panther,” “Ultimate X-Men,” and “The Ultimates” as the saga continues to unfold.

Introducing the New Winter Soldier, AKA Wolverine

In this revitalized Ultimate Universe narrative, Logan seemingly transforms into the Winter Soldier. This plight sees him manipulated as an unwilling government weapon, aligning him more closely with Bucky Barnes, the original Winter Soldier, who is known for his tumultuous past and struggle for redemption.

In the new “Ultimate Wolverine” series, writer Chris Condon explains that the story came to him right away.

“When Wil Moss called me and asked me if I wanted to take on this title, I jumped at the chance and immediately had an idea of what to do with it,” Condon said via Marvel.com. “I’m bringing my essence of storytelling from That Texas Blood to the Marvel Universe with Wolverine, looking back at what came before and bringing us something new.”

The allusions to the Winter Soldier mythos are also immediately apparent. “You might notice that there’s a Red Star on his costume, and you might wonder why,” the writer continued. “If you look at that mask, there’s a muzzle on him, and that’s because he’s wild.”

The Maker, a significant figure in this storyline, plays a crucial role in orchestrating these changes. He represents the corrupt forces behind the scenes. The concept of heroes being used as pawns elevates the stakes, further complicating the narrative landscape.

Creative Team Behind the Comic

The new “Ultimate Wolverine” series brings together a talented creative team led by writer Chris Condon. Condon's vision aims to infuse depth into the characters, drawing from his experiences in other narratives like That Texas Blood. He plans to blend classic superhero action with dynamic character explorations, creating a unique experience for readers.

Artist Alessandro Cappuccio complements Condon's storytelling with a distinctive visual style that brings the Ultimate Universe to life. His illustrations balance gritty realism with stylized action, making the series visually engaging. Notable artists will contribute variant covers, adding collectible elements to the release. Gleb Melnikov and Steve Skroce are among those tasked with capturing the essence of the revitalized characters, offering a visual narrative that parallels the written story.

Upcoming Release Details

“Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1”, set to release on December 11, 2024. This one-shot serves as a prelude, concluding the first year of Marvel’s fresh take on the Ultimate Universe while setting the stage for “Ultimate Wolverine #1”, which will be released on January 15, 2025.

Wolverine's shift into the Winter Soldier role in the Ultimate Universe offers a fascinating crossover of character arcs and ideologies. This renewed collaboration between characters like Bucky Barnes and Logan opens avenues for rich storytelling and character development.

Bucky Barnes in the MCU

As fans await the release of this transformative series, they are left pondering how these shifts will alter the established dynamics in the Marvel comic landscape, both within the Ultimate Universe and across the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bucky Barnes may no longer wear the mantle of the Winter Soldier, at least in this alternate reality, but the legacy and complexities of that identity will undoubtedly influence the narrative as Logan steps into the spotlight.

For fans of Bucky Barnes, specifically the MCU's version portrayed by Sebastian Stan, the character will return in next year's Phase Five climax, Thunderbolts* from director Jake Schreier. Thunderbolts* sees Bucky Barnes connect with, as Disney describes them, the “least anticipated group of misfits” in what feels to be an anti-Avengers-style Marvel movie.

Many expected Stan to reappear alongside his The Falcon and the Winter Soldier cast mate Anthony Mackie in Julius Onah's Captain America: Brave New World (2025), but–unless these rumors appear to be true–he will not make an appearance in the political espionage thriller.

How do you feel about Wolverine becoming the new Winter Soldier?

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
