After Production Issues, Marvel and Sony’s ‘Spider-Man 4’ Not Releasing as Expected

Marvel Studios has officially shifted the release date for Spider-Man 4, moving it from its original July 24, 2026, slot to a new opening on July 31, 2026.

Tom Holland, the star of Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man franchise, confirmed late last year that a fourth film was in development. Slated to follow Avengers: Doomsday (formerly Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) in theaters, Spider-Man 4 serves as the highly anticipated sequel to 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed nearly $2 billion worldwide.

As previously reported, Jon Watts, who helmed the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy, will not be returning for the fourth installment. Instead, Destin Daniel Cretton, best known for directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), is stepping in to take over directorial duties. Beyond Holland, no other cast members have been officially announced, though early reports suggest Zendaya’s role as MJ may be significantly reduced.

Spider-Man: No Way Home left Peter Parker in a radically different place, with the Multiversal chaos resetting his world and erasing his existence from the memories of his closest friends. With this narrative shift, Spider-Man 4 is expected to explore fresh dynamics and introduce new characters. One potential addition? Gwen Stacy, if the reported working title—Blue Oasis—holds any significance.

Holland himself confirmed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that production on the film would begin in 2025. This came after discussions were halted due to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. However, while the original release date was set for July 24, 2026, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have opted to delay the film by one week, now positioning it to debut on July 31, 2026.

The likely reason behind the move? Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic, The Odyssey, which arrives just two weeks earlier. Given Nolan’s track record with films like Interstellar (2014) and Oppenheimer (2023), his take on Homer’s classic poem is expected to dominate premium screens such as IMAX. Complicating matters further, both Holland and Zendaya are part of The Odyssey’s ensemble cast, which also includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal.

The new date also positions Spider-Man 4 to benefit from a release strategy similar to last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine. As Deadline pointed out, “What’s so special about July 31 over July 24? It’s the last Friday in July, which is essentially where Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine played to an opening of $211.4M domestic, $444.7M worldwide.” With this shift, Spider-Man 4 will now compete directly with Paramount’s Paw Patrol 3.

Before the wallcrawler swings back onto the big screen, the MCU will undergo significant changes as Phase Five concludes and Phase Six kicks off. Captain America: Brave New World (2025) serves as the 35th MCU film and the penultimate entry in Phase Five, before Thunderbolts* closes the chapter.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps, directed by Matt Shakman, will then launch Phase Six, introducing Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing), and Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch) before they join Robert Downey Jr.'s Victor Von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (2026).

With Spider-Man 4 arriving shortly after Avengers: Doomsday, fans can expect Holland’s Peter Parker to have some involvement in the next major Avengers crossover. However, what role he’ll play remains a mystery. After that, the Multiverse Saga will move toward its climactic conclusion with 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, once again helmed by the Russo Brothers.
