Dolly Parton Exposes Late Husband’s Secret Dollywood Obsession

Dolly Parton is known for her signature sparkle, incredible generosity, and love for all things Southern. But when it comes to Dollywood—the beloved Tennessee theme park she co-founded—her late husband Carl Dean had a surprisingly low-key approach to visiting.

On March 14, Dolly Parton made an emotional return to Dollywood for the park’s 40th anniversary celebration. It was her first public appearance since the passing of her husband, Carl Dean, on March 3, 2025. The couple was married for nearly six decades, though Dean largely stayed out of the spotlight.

During the event, Parton took a moment to thank the crowd for their support, sharing, “I will always love him, and I miss him.” She also admitted that despite the heartache, she was looking forward to some joy. “I need some fun, so I’m probably gonna be stupid. I’ve been crying enough the last week or two,” she said with a laugh.

Carl Dean Had a Secret Way of Visiting Dollywood

While Dollywood is one of the most popular theme parks in the country, Carl Dean had no interest in being treated like a VIP. Instead, he had his own unique way of visiting—one that most guests would never expect.

“He used to come to the park; he bought his own ticket—stood in line and got his ticket. He didn't want somebody giving him a ticket ‘cause he was Dolly’s husband,” Parton revealed. “Everybody thinks that's the funniest thing.”

In fact, Dean only visited Dollywood when Parton wasn’t there. He would never join her for grand openings or media events, preferring to enjoy the park in private and on his own terms.

Carl’s Theme Park Tips (And A Love For Funnel Cakes!)

Just because he avoided the spotlight didn’t mean Dean wasn’t paying attention. According to Parton, he was full of suggestions for improving the park experience.

“He would say, ‘You need more bathrooms,’” she shared, imitating his voice. “Or he would say, ‘You need to tell them this or that. It's crowded over in that area. You might want to tell them they ought to do this or that.’”

As for his favorite part of the park? It wasn’t the thrilling Wild Eagle coaster or the award-winning entertainment—it was the food! Dean loved Dollywood’s famous funnel cakes, a favorite he and Parton shared.

Even after all these years, Dollywood remains a labor of love for Parton. And if she had the chance to visit like a regular guest, she knows exactly how she’d do it.

“I think I would do like Carl,” she said. “I would just walk around, and look at everything.”

It’s clear that Dollywood holds a special place in Parton’s heart—not just as a theme park, but as a place filled with memories of the man she loved for nearly 60 years.
