A new viral Reddit thread is warning Disney guests to take extreme caution when visiting Walt Disney World’s water parks this week — especially barefoot. One family, staying at a Disney resort and using the free water park admission perk available on check-in day, reported painful burns on their feet after visiting Typhoon Lagoon on Sunday, July 27.

“It was super fun,” the poster shared, “but please be sure to pack water shoes of some sort because the pavement was so hot we all burnt our feet horribly! So burnt that it was hard to walk our whole trip and the skin is peeling.”
The warning, initially posted in a Disney planning subreddit, has since sparked hundreds of comments — most in support of the family’s reminder, and many sharing their own painful experiences with the heat-absorbing walkways at Disney’s water parks.
Reddit Reacts: “We Took 8 Steps and Turned Back”
Other commenters backed up the family's warning, noting just how quickly the situation can go from “refreshing day at the water park” to “blistered feet and regret.”
“I dressed everyone in flip-flops and we stuffed them in our locker… We all took like 8 steps away from the locker area and then turned around and went back for our flip-flops.”
Another added, “Last summer I bought water shoes for my boyfriend and he said, ‘I’m not wearing those.’ Three minutes later, he went back to get them.”
And perhaps most relatable of all: “This is how I started wearing Crocs.”
One common theme? Nobody expects the burn until it’s too late.
“Saw so many people (including kids!) walking around barefoot and was shocked,” one user said. “Even if you're just walking from pool to pool/wet area, that concrete is burning hot.”
Extreme Heat Advisory in Effect at Walt Disney World
From July 28 through at least Friday, forecast highs in the theme park corridor are expected to reach 99°F, with humidity pushing heat index values into the 106–112°F range. These conditions are categorized as Level 3 to 4 HeatRisk — a zone in which anyone without proper hydration, cooling, or shade is at risk of heat-related illness or injury.
Advisory Details (as of Monday, July 28):
-
Heat Index: 106–112°F during peak hours
-
Actual Temps: 93–100°F
-
Timeframe: 12 PM–7 PM (daily)
-
Risk Level: Major to Extreme (Level 3–4)
What Disney Guests Should Know Before Visiting a Water Park This Week
While Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach offer an escape from the crowds and heat of the theme parks, the uncovered concrete walkways around pools and lazy rivers are absorbing extreme surface temperatures — and it’s catching guests off guard.
If you’re headed to a Disney water park this week, here’s how to stay safe:
-
Bring water shoes, Crocs, or quick-dry sandals. Avoid going barefoot, even between water areas.
-
Use towel paths when possible — and test the ground before stepping off wet areas.
-
Hydrate constantly. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to start drinking water.
-
Take frequent shade breaks, especially between noon and 4 PM.
-
Don’t assume surface temperatures match the air temperature. In full sun, concrete can hit 130°F+ — more than enough to cause first-degree burns within minutes.
One Painful Perk
Guests staying at Disney-owned resorts are offered complimentary water park access on the day of check-in — a welcome bonus during a brutal summer season. But as this family found out the hard way, even a free day can come with some serious costs if you’re not properly prepared.
“Please, pack water shoes,” the original poster urged. “We loved the park, but we’re still peeling.”

How about using Common Sense when planning a vacation to FLORIDA! It doesn’t matter where we go on vacation, my wife has alway’s insisted we pack some type of water shoes, for those “just in case” moments!
