Disney Replaces Future Marvel Film With ‘The Simpsons’

The Walt Disney Company has once again shuffled its movie release schedule. According to a report from Deadline on Monday, The Simpsons will return to the big screen in 2027, filling a slot originally intended for an untitled Marvel Studios film.

The Simpsons first hit movie theaters in 2007 with The Simpsons Movie, which was a major box office success. The film earned $183 million domestically and over $536 million worldwide. In 2018, 20th Century Fox announced plans for a sequel, but these plans were put on hold after Disney’s acquisition of the studio. Now, the Simpson family is making its grand return to the big screen exactly two decades after the original film’s release.

On September 29, 2025, Disney revealed that the new Simpsons movie will premiere on July 23, 2027.

Woohoo! The Simpsons are coming to theaters with an all-new movie on July 23, 2027!

Disney has yet to share any details about the plot or title of the movie. However, clues in the promotional material—specifically “2” sprinkles on Homer’s donut—suggest that the film could be called The Simpsons Movie 2. While the plot remains under wraps, it’s likely (though not confirmed) that the original voice cast will return, including Dan Castellaneta as Homer, Yeardley Smith as Lisa, Julie Kavner as Marge, and Nancy Cartwright as Bart. It remains unclear whether David Silverman, the director of The Simpsons Movie (2007) and many episodes of the show, will return to direct the 2027 film.

According to Deadline, the Simpsons movie’s 2027 release has taken over a slot previously held for an untitled Marvel Studios film. Marvel fans, however, can still look forward to Avengers: Secret Wars, which is still scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.

Marvel Studios is no stranger to shifting its release dates. The latest change came when Avengers: Doomsday was pushed back from its original May 2026 release date to December 18, 2026. Similarly, Avengers: Secret Wars, initially set for May 2027, has also been moved to December. Marvel’s next movie release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
