Disney has always been open to change, but the current wave feels bigger than anything in recent memory. Entire lands are being built, and beloved attractions are being rewritten with new themes and new stories.
For some guests, it’s thrilling. For others, it’s hard to watch longtime favorites vanish into history.
Four Expansions in Development
Animal Kingdom will be reshaped by Tropical Americas, blending cultural theming with adventurous rides. Hollywood Studios is finally delivering on fan demand with a dedicated Monsters Inc. Land.
Magic Kingdom is getting Piston Peak, inspired by Planes: Fire & Rescue, as well as the darker but highly anticipated Villains Land. These projects demonstrate that Disney is fully committed to expansion, but they also signify significant changes for attractions that have defined the parks for decades.

Farewell to the Bugs
Since 1998, It’s Tough to Be a Bug has been a quirky staple inside the Tree of Life. With its combination of humor, 3D effects, and a few jump scares, it became a rite of passage at Animal Kingdom.
But it’s closing to make way for a Zootopia show, one that introduces Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and the world of mammal metropolis. It’s a natural fit for the park, but the bug gags are gone for good.

The Coaster Gets a Muppet Makeover
Hollywood Studios is also making a dramatic shift with Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. The high-speed ride is losing its rock-and-roll identity in favor of a Muppets retheme. Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Gonzo will bring their signature humor to the attraction, creating a unique tone for the coaster.
Guests may or may not laugh through the inversions, but Disney is clearly investing in keeping the Muppets relevant.

From Dinosaurs to Indiana Jones
Animal Kingdom’s DINOSAUR ride is trading prehistoric danger for archaeological thrills. The attraction is being reimagined as a never-before-experienced Indiana Jones adventure.
This marks the end of an era for fans who loved the frantic DINOSAUR chase, but the swap injects fresh energy into a ride that had begun to feel dated.

The End of Muppet Vision 3D
Muppet Vision 3D has been a fixture of Hollywood Studios for decades, but it has now closed for good. The building will become part of Monsters Inc. Land, cementing Pixar’s place in the park.
For Muppet fans, the closure stings, as it was Jim Henson’s final project. Still, Monsters Inc. has long been deserving of a space big enough to call home.

Big Thunder Gets a New Story
At Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is preparing for its most ambitious refurbishment yet.
Beyond maintenance, Disney plans to overhaul the plot, redesign cavern scenes, and introduce enhanced effects. The coaster’s spirit will remain intact, but the way guests experience it will change in a lasting way.
More Updates Across the Parks
Disney’s transformation isn’t limited to these five. Spaceship Earth is lined up for long-awaited upgrades. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin may soon receive a modern update.
Smugglers Run is introducing a Mandalorian-inspired storyline. And EPCOT’s Test Track 3.0 has reopened with a futuristic look tied to electric vehicles.

Looking Toward the Future
Disney World is moving into an era defined by reinvention. New lands and overhauled attractions promise to draw in first-time visitors, even if longtime fans feel nostalgic for what’s gone.
Change has always been Disney’s way, and this round ensures the parks will deliver fresh stories and adventures for decades to come.
