‘Star Wars’ Changes Rey and Finn With New ‘The Last Jedi’ Sequel

As Lucasfilm maps out the next era of Star Wars films, fans will soon get a new chapter much sooner than expected. “Star Wars: The Jaws of Jakku”—an original audio drama written by Cavan Scott and narrated by Helen Sadler—will debut on Audible on October 9, 2025, marking the franchise’s latest storytelling venture beyond the screen.

Set between Star Wars: Episode VIII–The Last Jedi (2017) and Star Wars: Episode IX–The Rise of Skywalker (2019), the story follows Rey, Finn, and BB-8 as they return to the desert world of Jakku. The official Audible synopsis teases an introspective journey for the young Jedi:

“Following the events of The Last Jedi, Rey struggles to let go of her lonely childhood on the desert planet of Jakku. Hoping to have a breakthrough in her Jedi training, she returns to her home world with Finn and BB-8 in tow,” it reads. “When they meet a young girl on a dangerous mission to save her family, they travel through pitch-black tunnels beneath the sand where they encounter scurrying gnaw-jaws, a haunting terror from the past, and maybe—just maybe—hope for them all.”

The project’s timing is significant. With Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey-focused feature currently on hold, “The Jaws of Jakku” brings the character back into the spotlight ahead of her next big-screen appearance. “Rey is the most valuable cinematic asset, in some ways maybe the only one Star Wars has right now,” an insider told The Hollywood Reporter.

Lucasfilm’s broader slate remains in motion, with Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter targeting 2027 and James Mangold’s Force-origin film moving up in internal priority. Meanwhile, Simon Kinberg’s newly announced trilogy aims to chart a completely new path outside the Skywalker lineage. “The intent here is to have brand new characters and a new story, and not have it be a continuation,” sources told THR.

But first, fans will return to the sands of Jakku. As “The Jaws of Jakku” explores Rey’s lingering connection to her past, it could offer a fresh lens on her evolution and set the tone for Star Wars’ next storytelling phase. The Force calls again October 9.
