As Marvel Studios charts its post-Endgame future, Avengers: Doomsday is emerging as both a course correction and a statement of intent. The December 18, 2026 release isn’t just another ensemble chapter—it’s a reshaping of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, built around revived legacies, recalculated risks, and a villain unlike any the franchise has centered before.
The film reunites Marvel with directors Anthony and Joe Russo, marking their first return since Avengers: Endgame (2019). In the years since, the studio has retooled its long-term plan, moving away from Kang-centric storytelling and instead positioning Doctor Doom as the next major threat. Adding to the intrigue, Robert Downey Jr. is reentering the MCU not as Iron Man, but as Doom himself.
Marvel began laying the groundwork in early 2025 with a high-profile “chair reveal” livestream that confirmed a sweeping roster of characters. Among those announced were Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), and James Marsden (Cyclops).
The reveal also marked a significant reunion with Fox’s X-Men era, confirming Ian McKellen (Magneto), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), and Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler). The casting reinforced Marvel Studios’ ongoing commitment to a fully integrated Multiverse.
Yet the livestream also highlighted who wasn’t involved—at least not yet. Several veteran MCU actors acknowledged their absence, including Mark Ruffalo. Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Ruffalo joked about being sidelined, saying, “They decided that it was better to get rid of me than for me to tell the end of the next movie.”
Ruffalo later confirmed he will not appear in Doomsday following rumors he had been dismissed. However, Marvel has confirmed his return as Bruce Banner in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and currently dated for July 31, 2026. Reports have also suggested Kevin Feige has taken a lighter hand on Spider-Man 4 as he focuses on Doomsday.
Other absences included Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, and recent Multiverse arrivals such as Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Evans’ absence turned out to be temporary.
During Avatar: Fire and Ash’s theatrical run in 2025, Marvel released a series of Doomsday teasers that quickly circulated online. The first confirmed Evans’ return as Steve Rogers, while later spots centered on Thor, the X-Men, and a sequence featuring Wakandans encountering Ben Grimm/Thing, portrayed by Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
Now, fresh rumors suggest Doomsday may open with one of the MCU’s most unexpected matchups yet. According to MyTimeToShineHello, as reported by Comic Book Movie, the film’s opening scene will involve Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man facing off against the X-Men.
“Apparently, the movie will open with Maguire's web-slinger battling the X-Men, ‘and particularly Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine,'” Comic Book Movie writes. “This somewhat corroborates claims we've heard about an Incursion destroying Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Universe, and it gives Maguire's Peter Parker a lot to fight for in this movie and Avengers: Secret Wars as he looks to bring back his loved ones.”
The same source also offered bold commentary on the project’s scope. “Avengers: Doomsday is not only the most epic Avengers movie, but it might be the most epic movie OF ALL TIME,” they wrote (via Comic Book Movie). “The opening scene alone tops any previous Avengers movie, and the final battle is just INSANE.”
Marvel and Disney have not verified these claims, but the level of speculation surrounding Doomsday is notable this far from release. Positioned in a prime December window, the film is already being viewed as a potential box office juggernaut.
Beyond casting and rumors, promotional materials have added another layer of intrigue. Artwork revealed at the Walt Disney Studios Marketing Expo in Shanghai last year offered a close look at Doctor Doom’s armor, particularly two symbols attached to his cloak.
One mirrors Captain Marvel’s star, while the other resembles Mjolnir. Fans quickly theorized the symbols could reference Doom defeating Multiversal counterparts of the heroes, rather than serving as ornamental details.
Whether metaphorical or plot-driven, the imagery has intensified interest in Doom’s rise and the broader reset Marvel appears to be orchestrating.
That reset comes amid mixed box office results. While The Fantastic Four: First Steps opened strong in 2025 and outperformed Captain America: Brave New World (2025) and Thunderbolts* (2025), its sharp second-weekend decline highlighted Marvel’s difficulty maintaining consistency.
Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers have repeatedly emphasized that Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) are designed as a paired event to realign the franchise. The films are expected to bring the X-Men to the forefront while redefining which heroes will carry the MCU forward.
