Disney Just Proved Hollywood Studios Will Look Nothing Like It Does Today

Walt Disney Imagineering just filed two new permits for Hollywood Studios, and they confirm what anyone who's visited the park recently already suspects: this place is being completely rebuilt, and it's never going back to what it was. The permits cover signage installation in the former Animation Courtyard area, which is just the latest concrete step in a transformation that has already demolished landmarks, closed beloved attractions, and fundamentally altered what Hollywood Studios looks like from every direction.

The two permits both list Design Communications as the contractor with scope of work described simply as “install signage.” Simple description, but the implications are significant because you don't start installing permanent signage until a project is actually close to opening. These permits suggest the summer timeline being targeted for the Animation Courtyard transformation is actually realistic rather than just optimistic planning.

What's Getting New Signs at Hollywood Studios

The first permit covers the building housing The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure, which keeps its show but gets renamed “Studio Theater” as part of the overall transformation. The second permit covers the address where the Animation Courtyard archway once stood, before it was demolished in October 2025. Based on concept art Disney has released, that location is getting a sign reading “The Walt Disney Studios” to establish the new thematic identity of the entire area.

The Animation Courtyard transformation draws inspiration from the actual Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, California. When everything is finished, the former Star Wars Launch Bay becomes The Magic of Disney Animation with interactive animation workshops, a short film presentation, character meets, and an indoor play area for kids. The Disney Jr. show in the soundstage is expected to open first, potentially early summer based on current construction progress.

The biggest deal for longtime Hollywood Studios fans is the return of the Sorcerer Mickey hat. The iconic structure that defined the park's skyline for years is coming back at The Magic of Disney Animation entrance, giving the park a recognizable landmark that fans have genuinely missed since it was removed years ago.

Everything Happening Simultaneously at Hollywood Studios

Here's the thing that really puts the scale of Hollywood Studios' transformation into perspective. The Animation Courtyard work is just one of multiple massive construction projects happening at the same time throughout the park.

Grand Avenue, including Muppet*Vision 3D and Mama Melrose's, already closed earlier in 2025 to make way for Monstropolis, a new land inspired by Pixar's Monsters Inc., featuring a suspended roller coaster themed to the door vault sequence. A construction crane for that coaster now stands so high above the Hollywood Studios skyline that guests can see it from Galaxy's Edge, Toy Story Land, and Echo Lake all at the same time.

Rock ‘n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith closes permanently on March 1 and gets rethemed to the Muppets. Animation Courtyard closed September 2025. Grand Avenue is already gone. The park that exists right now barely resembles Hollywood Studios from just 18 months ago, and based on these permit filings, the transformation is nowhere close to finished.

Disney World Is Being Rebuilt Everywhere

Hollywood Studios isn't even the only Disney World park under massive construction right now. Magic Kingdom is pursuing what Disney describes as its largest expansion ever, including Cars-themed Piston Peak National Park and a Beyond Big Thunder project featuring Disney Villains. Animal Kingdom permanently closed DinoLand U.S.A. and is building Tropical Americas with Encanto and Indiana Jones experiences, targeting a 2027 opening.

Disney Experiences incoming CEO Josh D'Amaro said during D23 Expo 2024 that dirt was moving across the resort. By early 2026 that statement is a massive understatement. Cranes, permits, and construction crews are actively reshaping multiple parks simultaneously in ways that haven't been seen at Disney World in decades.

These two Hollywood Studios signage permits are small details in the context of everything happening, but they confirm that individual projects are hitting their milestones and moving toward openings that will permanently change what this park is. The summer transformation is coming whether guests are ready for it or not.
