Disney World Confirms Why It Removed This ‘Star Wars’ Area

Here’s When the Expansion Will Open

Animation Courtyard has long served as a quiet but meaningful corner of the park. While blockbuster attractions draw crowds elsewhere, this space has offered something different: a celebration of the artistry behind Disney magic. Families have wandered through shaded pathways, children have danced alongside Disney Jr. characters, and lifelong fans have paused to reflect on the creative legacy of The Walt Disney Company.

But as Walt Disney World continues evolving alongside guest expectations, even the most nostalgic corners of the parks cannot remain frozen in time. In recent years, Disney’s Hollywood Studios has undergone dramatic shifts, from the arrival of immersive lands to updated stage productions and refreshed character experiences. That constant evolution has left fans wondering which spaces might be next.

Now, a new change is stirring conversation — one that blends heartfelt nostalgia with ambitious storytelling.

A Beloved Creative Corner at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Begins Shifting Toward Something New

While Animation Courtyard has never been the loudest or most thrilling section of the park, its emotional resonance with Disney fans has remained undeniable. The area’s connection to Disney animation history has made it feel like a tribute to the artists and dreamers who built the company’s legacy.

Over time, however, portions of the courtyard — including the space once home to Star Wars: Launch Bay — have felt increasingly transitional as the park leaned further into immersive lands like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Toy Story Land. Guests frequently speculated about whether Disney might eventually return the area to its animation roots in a more substantial way.

Those conversations intensified as Disney announced upcoming closures tied to future development, prompting a mixture of curiosity, nostalgia, and cautious excitement among visitors.

Fans Begin Noticing Closures and Growing Speculation Surrounding Animation Courtyard’s Future

The biggest turning point arrived when Disney confirmed that Animation Courtyard and Disney Jr. Play and Dance! would close on September 25, 2025. For many families, particularly those with young children, the news carried emotional weight.

Online communities quickly filled with reactions. On Reddit and X (formerly Twitter), fans shared memories of children meeting Disney Jr. characters, taking first drawing lessons, or simply escaping the Florida heat in the courtyard’s shaded spaces. Some described the closure as bittersweet — a necessary step for growth but still difficult to watch.

Others expressed cautious optimism, pointing out Disney’s recent track record of transforming older spaces into highly immersive storytelling environments. If the courtyard were to change, fans hoped the replacement would honor Disney animation in a meaningful way.

That hope has now been answered.

Disney Officially Reveals the Magic of Disney Animation as a Deeply Immersive Studio-Inspired Experience

Disney has confirmed that a massive reimagining is on the way, with The Magic of Disney Animation set to debut in late summer 2026. The experience will transform the former Star Wars: Launch Bay area into a whimsical tribute to Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California — complete with the instantly recognizable Sorcerer Hat.

The attraction’s central story imagines animators stepping away from their desks, leaving Disney characters free to take over the studio. Guests will explore playful versions of real animation departments, with portraits springing to life in a nod to Once Upon a Studio.

One standout offering, Olaf Draws!, introduces a new Olaf Audio-Animatronics figure voiced by Josh Gad. While Olaf hosts the experience, real Disney animators and filmmakers behind Frozen, Encanto, and Zootopia will appear via video to guide guests through sketching beloved characters including Mickey and Minnie, Stitch, Ursula, and Judy Hopps.

Character encounters will also evolve through Off the Page!, placing characters inside the departments responsible for their creation — from Mulan in Story to Stitch in Effects.

Families and Young Guests Gain New Interactive Spaces While the Courtyard Itself Receives a Full Identity Refresh

Younger visitors will find a dedicated play space in Drawn to Wonderland, inspired by Mary Blair’s Alice in Wonderland concept art. The indoor playground will feature a musical flower garden, a Mad Tea Party play area, and an explorable Tulgey Wood.

Beyond the main building, the entire Animation Courtyard will be rebranded as The Walt Disney Studios, designed to resemble the lush Burbank animation lot with shaded seating and relaxation areas. Notably, The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure will remain in the Studio Theater, while a new Disney Jr. stage show is also planned.

The Transformation Signals Both an Emotional Farewell and an Exciting Future for Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The timeline creates a noticeable gap between closure and reopening, meaning guests will experience a period without the courtyard before the new offering arrives. That reality has sparked mixed emotions, with some fans mourning the loss of familiar experiences while others eagerly anticipate a more immersive celebration of Disney animation.

For future travelers, the transformation highlights Disney’s ongoing push toward experiences that blend nostalgia with interactivity and storytelling depth — a direction that continues shaping Walt Disney World’s long-term evolution.

As anticipation builds toward late summer 2026, one question remains: will this reimagined animation space capture the same heartfelt charm that made Animation Courtyard so meaningful in the first place?

What do you think about Disney’s plans for The Magic of Disney Animation? Are you excited for the transformation, or will you miss the current Animation Courtyard? Let us know your thoughts.

Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
