Visitors walking through Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail at Disney’s Animal Kingdom recently noticed that the exhibit looked a little different than usual.
Several of the gorillas that normally occupy the habitat were missing, leaving guests wondering where the animals had gone. The popular wildlife trail usually offers plenty of opportunities to watch the troop interact, but the sudden absence of several gorillas caught many visitors off guard.
The good news is that the animals are safe—there’s simply some unexpected maintenance happening behind the scenes.
Missing Gorillas Raise Eyebrows
Guests first began asking questions when they arrived at the exhibit and realized that only a few gorillas were visible in the habitat.
Cast Members confirmed that not all members of the troop were available for viewing at that time. The trail itself remained open, but many of the animals guests normally expect to see were temporarily missing.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is home to two separate gorilla groups. One is a family troop that typically occupies the main habitat along the trail, while the other is a bachelor group of adult males that live separately.
While the bachelor males could still be spotted by visitors, the rest of the troop had disappeared from the main enclosure.
A Curious Gorilla Caused the Problem
The reason for the temporary relocation turned out to be fairly unexpected.
Reports later revealed that one of the gorillas had been picking at the gasket between two large viewing windows in the enclosure. Over time, that behavior damaged the material holding the window panels in place.
The glass itself did not shatter, but the damage was enough that Disney needed to make repairs.
To safely complete that work, the park moved the gorilla family backstage until the window can be properly fixed.
Guests walking through the trail may notice a section of the viewing area covered while maintenance crews address the issue.
One of the Park’s Most Beloved Animal Experiences
Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is one of the most unique animal encounters at Walt Disney World. The walking path allows guests to see gorillas up close through large glass viewing windows, creating a powerful moment for visitors experiencing these animals for the first time.
The exhibit has been part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom since the park first opened in 1998.
Over the years, it has been home to several generations of gorillas. The troop was led for decades by a silverback named Gino, who passed away last year at the age of 44.
Gino became well known among animal care teams for his intelligence and cooperation during veterinary research. His ability to participate in medical procedures helped researchers better understand gorilla health.
The Gorillas Should Return Soon
For now, guests may notice fewer gorillas visible along the trail. However, the attraction remains open and visitors can still see the bachelor gorillas in their habitat.
Once the damaged viewing window is repaired, the rest of the troop is expected to return to their enclosure.
Temporary changes like this are a normal part of operating large animal habitats. Maintenance work, upgrades, and safety improvements sometimes require animals to be moved backstage for short periods.
In this case, it appears one curious gorilla simply found a way to test the strength of the enclosure—and Disney is making sure everything is repaired before the troop returns.
