Big changes are on the horizon at Magic Kingdom, and Tomorrowland is about to take a big step forward with the return of a fan-favorite attraction.
Disney is putting the finishing touches on a reimagined Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and recent glimpses inside the attraction reveal a transformation that goes well beyond standard maintenance. As part of Disney’s ongoing investment in its parks for 2025 and 2026, this update introduces new technology and refreshed elements designed to elevate the guest experience.
One of the most noticeable upgrades comes as soon as riders board their Star Cruisers. The blasters, once fixed to the ride vehicles, are now fully removable, giving guests far more control as they take aim throughout the attraction. This change, paired with updated lighting, redesigned targets, and enhanced onboard visuals, shifts the ride toward a more interactive and responsive format.
Disney has also made adjustments to the attraction’s storyline presentation. Updated scenes and the introduction of a new animatronic character named Buddy provide guests with a clearer setup before the mission begins. Acting as a guide, Buddy helps prepare riders for their battle against Emperor Zurg, adding a new layer to the experience while keeping the original premise intact.
The ride vehicles themselves have seen improvements as well.
Ahead of its official reopening on April 8, Disney is rolling out cast member previews as part of its final testing phase. These previews are scheduled from March 21 through March 27 and give cast members the chance to experience the attraction before guests arrive.
This process serves multiple purposes. It allows Disney to evaluate how the attraction performs under real conditions while also ensuring that cast members are familiar with the updated experience. Testing during this stage often focuses on ride timing, guest flow, and the reliability of new features like the redesigned blasters.
There is also the possibility that some guests could experience the attraction earlier than expected. Disney has a history of quietly opening rides before their official debut through limited, unannounced access periods. These “soft openings” can happen if everything is operating smoothly.
For guests visiting around the reopening date, this creates a bit of uncertainty. Some may get the chance to ride ahead of schedule, while others who planned their visit specifically for April 8 might find the moment feels less like a major launch if the attraction is already running.
With its updated features and refreshed presentation, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin represents Disney’s approach to updating classic attractions while keeping their original appeal. The combination of new technology and familiar elements aims to appeal to both longtime fans and first-time riders.
Looking ahead, this is only one piece of a much larger transformation. Magic Kingdom is set to welcome additional expansions in the coming years, including Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land.
