Walk into EPCOT on any given morning and the first thing you see is Spaceship Earth.

Not a castle, not a statue, not a fountain — a massive silver geodesic sphere that has been rising above the park's entrance plaza since 1982.
It is genuinely one of the most distinctive structures at any theme park anywhere in the world, and the attraction inside it has been a cornerstone of the EPCOT experience for over four decades. Guests board slow-moving omnimover vehicles and travel through a detailed history of human communication, from ancient cave paintings through the invention of the printing press to the rise of the internet, all narrated with the kind of sweeping optimism that defined EPCOT's original mission.
For most visitors, it is simply the ride at the front of the park — the one you do on the way in, the one that shows up in every trip photo, the one that makes EPCOT feel like itself. Which is exactly why the past three days have felt different to guests arriving at EPCOT expecting a normal park day. Spaceship Earth has been closed since Friday, no cause has been announced, and Disney has stayed completely silent. On Monday morning, nothing has changed — except that we now have a clearer picture of what is happening on the ground, and some of what we are hearing is significant.
Three Days Down, No Word From Disney

Spaceship Earth first showed signs of trouble on March 20 before failing to reopen on the morning of March 21. It did not operate at all on Saturday or Sunday, and as of Monday morning it remains closed with no indication from the My Disney Experience app that an opening is imminent. The app continues to list standard operating hours for the attraction, confirming this is an unplanned closure rather than a scheduled maintenance window.
Cast members stationed at the front of the attraction have blocked access to the queue and are directing guests elsewhere. When guests have asked whether the ride might reopen during the day, cast members on site have indicated it will not, with the advice to keep monitoring the app for any status changes.
Walt Disney World did not respond to a request for comment about the closure.
The Roped-Off Post-Show Is the Detail That Changes the Story

If this were a standard ride malfunction, the queue would be closed and everything else would look normal. That is not what guests are finding at Spaceship Earth right now.
The entire Project Tomorrow post-show area, the interactive space guests typically walk through after completing the ride, has been roped off independently. Guests cannot access it at all. That is not something Disney does for temporary downtime. A closure that extends to the post-show points to something happening inside the building that requires keeping guests away from more than just the loading area, and that distinction matters when trying to read how serious this situation actually is.
Unconfirmed rumors online are pointing toward a burst pipe as the cause, with speculation that water damage may have affected one or more scenes inside the ride. Cast members at the attraction have not been sharing the reason for the closure with guests, and Disney has not addressed the speculation in any official capacity. The rumors remain unconfirmed, but the combination of three days of downtime, a sealed post-show, and total silence from Disney is giving them more traction than they might otherwise have.
The Cast Members Are Making the Most of It

Here is the part of this story that is worth smiling about. With Spaceship Earth sitting dark and guests approaching the queue only to find it blocked, the cast members stationed there have not just been redirecting foot traffic. A video shared by Nick Chappell on X shows cast members near the attraction hilariously acting out the Spaceship Earth ride experience for guests walking past — putting on an impromptu performance in place of the actual attraction.

It is funny, it is charming, and it is a genuinely good reminder of what separates a Disney park experience from almost anywhere else. The ride being closed is the problem. Cast members turning that into an unexpected moment for guests is the Disney difference, and it has been spreading online for good reason.
Why This Closure Hits Differently Than a Normal Downtime
Context matters here. Spaceship Earth just returned in October 2025 from a multi-month planned refurbishment that ran from August 25 and specifically targeted ride system and infrastructure work. The closure was lengthy, the work was extensive, and there were no notable changes to the ride experience when the attraction returned. Now, within months of completing that work, the ride is down for a third consecutive day with no explanation.
That sequence raises a legitimate question about the state of the attraction's systems and what resolution looks like this time around. A routine reset does not produce three days of downtime, a roped-off post-show, and no comment from the resort. Whatever is happening inside Spaceship Earth right now is a different category of problem from the kind that gets resolved between morning and afternoon.
What to Do If You Are Visiting EPCOT Soon

The guidance from cast members on site is clear and worth taking at face value: do not build your EPCOT day around Spaceship Earth right now. Check My Disney Experience before you arrive to see if the status has changed, but as of Monday morning there is no indication that a reopening is close.
The practical impact of this closure is real for guests who made Spaceship Earth a priority. It is the park's anchor attraction and the most photographed structure on the property. Losing it from your day is not like losing access to a secondary experience. For first-time visitors especially, its absence changes the shape of what an EPCOT visit looks like.
That said, EPCOT has a genuinely strong lineup right now. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Frozen Ever After, and the full World Showcase are all operating normally. The park's festival programming is active. A day at EPCOT without Spaceship Earth is still a full day — it just requires adjusting your plan before you walk through the gate rather than after.
We will update this story as soon as Disney provides any information about the cause or a return timeline. For the most current status on EPCOT attractions before your visit, our park guide is kept up to date and is worth checking before you finalize any plans. Do not let an unplanned closure be the thing that catches you off guard on a day you have been looking forward to.

Went on it today, 3/23 at 10:45am. 3 times during the ride, an announcement was played and the ride stopped saying it was taking longer than normal. We did finish the ride, and some people xhibits lights were off.
Cast member here.
Cast members don’t always know the reasons behind a shut down. That information is on a need-to-know basis.
I wish Disney World and all it’s parks would shut down altogether
We were just there on 3/19 while going up the ride was fine however coming back down the ride stopped and restarted 5 or 6 times. Having been on this ride several times we knew it was normal. My guess is the ride will reopen after this issue is fixed and repairs are made.
Epcot is by far the best park for all ages. The world attractions are absolutely perfect and enjoyable for everyone. I have been many times to all parks with Epcot our favorite. Though spaceship earth is great the other attractions make it worth time and money. When it reopens, it will add that extra touch to an already great experience.
Shut that place down for GOOD! THEYVE BEEN STEALING AND HURTING CHILDREN SINCE THE BEGINNING. They’re covering their tracks RIGHT NOW.
Maybe it’s being retrofitted to simulate circumnavigation of the Moon to tie in with Artemis.
Watched a tik toker walking through Disney World Orlando, this morning. Looks like a beautiful day at Disney!!
For those that say shut Disney down, please if you do not like it just do not go, leave the rest of us to make our own choices. If you drive a Lexis or live in an apartment, you should have both those shut down and closed, because I do not like them. We live in a free country in the United States. You do not like something move on, do not try to force others to do what you want. Also stop making false statements.
Name any park anywhere in the world that does not have ride or other problems, it happens, it is a fact of life, it is a fact of anything mechanical. Not enough to ruin a vacation or a life. Plenty of other things to do to still enjoy your time on you vacation.
We don’t ever go to Disneyland or Disney world anymore they are both to woke. DOLLYWOOD IS A HUNDRED TIMES. BETTER THEN BOTH OF THOSE THEME PARKS
NORMA & JENNIFER – 2 TYPICAL KARENS WHO DIDNT GET THEIR WAY .
What does WOKE have to do with Disney!! Good grief!
Sadly, the truth is that spaceship earth has been taken over by aliens. They believe it to be the control center for the entire earth and plan to hijack our planet.
This ride is so old its embarrassing…..time for an upgrade
If anyone noticed. All those sponsors that were there have pulled out over the years. The money they put in to keep them running are now in the control of Disney. When these sponsors seen all the money that EOCOT brings in, it became very apparent why should they keep paying.
We were there yesterday (23rd) and it was open. It stopped once while we were on it. Par for the course as far as Disney goes.
EPCOT is Separate from Disney World. The entire park would not be closed. There’s nothing wrong with the Sphere except it disturbs media terrorists who put the Sphere in Las Vegas. IT IS AGAINST INTERNATIONAL LAWS TO POST OR PUBLISH FRAUDULENT INFORMATION ON TO THE INTERNET. We have total Destruction to America’s mass media by FELON Media Terrorists who are NOW INTERNATIONAL CRIMINALS. DEPORTATIONS since Americans are tired of dealing with Illegal Unruly Children, who delivered total Destruction to the internet.
Media terrorist warriors has a serious delusional insane take on sphere shaped structures. The moon and golf balls must keep you inside 24/7, terrified and sweating just imagining cantelopes and bubbles are waiting to kill you the moment you step outside. And oh my god… Raindrops!! ROFL! 🤡 Queen right here
I delivered under that with box truck in 96 when updated. I know how it’s actually built..emergency exit wise. Walked thru it lights on.weird..never look at it the same. Was on it 25 like 4 times no line. I relax in it while wife kids shop…it’s old ride,it is….but I like. Great place after kids older cause Walt Disney gets old after, rides. Epcot great after 17-18 yrs old. Different from when they were young,90s….
It was back open yesterday the 24th and today the 25th
