A major Magic Kingdom attraction is finally ready to make its comeback—and it’s bringing some big changes with it.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen to guests on May 3, 2026, after being closed since January 2025. While refurbishments are nothing new at Walt Disney World, this one stands out for just how much has been updated, both in terms of storytelling and the ride experience itself.
This isn’t just a routine maintenance project. Disney has taken the opportunity to expand on the attraction’s long-running narrative, turning previously subtle details into a more clearly defined story. One of the biggest additions comes at the end of the ride. For the first time, guests will encounter the long-referenced “mother lode,” brought to life as a glittering cavern packed with gold. Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels can make selections seven days in advance, while all other visitors can book three days ahead. Even with that head start, securing a Lightning Lane for Big Thunder may prove difficult due to pent-up demand.
Some guests may turn to alternative strategies, such as booking a different Lightning Lane early and then trying to switch to Big Thunder later in the day. This approach depends on availability and timing, but it’s often used for top-tier attractions.
Of course, the standby line remains an option. While waits are expected to increase, the ride’s capacity allows it to handle large numbers of guests, which could make it a manageable choice for those willing to wait.
