Disney World has never been short on vacation extras. From Lightning Lane access to dining packages and resort perks, guests can spend a lot of money customizing their trips long before they arrive in Orlando.
But one longtime Disney hotel offering has started drawing criticism from fans who say it no longer feels nearly as useful as it once did.
Instead of making park days easier, many guests now argue that the purchase creates more hassle than convenience. Families say they constantly find themselves carrying the item around all day with little practical benefit once they leave their Disney hotel in the morning.
That conversation has only grown louder as Universal Orlando Resort continues expanding its own refillable drink system across its parks.
Disney Resort Perks Still Draw Plenty of Guests
There are still plenty of reasons why guests choose to stay at Disney resort hotels.
Many visitors love having access to Disney transportation, including buses, Monorails, Skyliner gondolas, and boats that move guests around the property without needing a car. Resort guests also get earlier access to dining reservations and Lightning Lane selections, which can make planning easier during crowded travel seasons.
Paid offerings like Lightning Lane and the Disney Dining Plan also remain popular with families hoping to simplify parts of their vacation.
Still, many fans feel another Disney hotel add-on has not kept up with how guests actually spend their park days.

This Purchase Is Starting To Frustrate Guests
Disney’s refillable resort mugs have become a familiar sight at Walt Disney World hotels over the years.
The insulated cups cost roughly $23 and come included with some Disney Dining Plan packages. Guests can refill them with soda, coffee, and tea at participating Disney hotel beverage stations throughout their stay for up to 14 days.
Disney uses RFID technology to activate the mugs during the guest’s eligible vacation window.
While the idea sounds appealing, many guests say the limitations quickly become frustrating.
Families often use the mugs during breakfast before heading to the parks. Once they leave the resort, though, the cups lose most of their value because they cannot be used for refills inside Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, or Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
That means guests either carry large cups around all day or make the extra trip back to the hotel room to drop them off.
For families already carrying backpacks, ponchos, snacks, and souvenirs, many feel the mugs simply become another thing to manage.

Universal’s System Keeps Getting Bigger
A large part of the frustration comes from comparisons to Universal Orlando Resort.
Universal’s refillable cups are available throughout its parks via Coca-Cola Freestyle machines. Guests can continue using their cups throughout the day, not just at their hotel.
Epic Universe has expanded the concept even further by offering specialty drink flavors tied specifically to the new park.
Some Disney fans believe Walt Disney World could do something similar. Many have suggested themed drink stations in Tomorrowland or Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Others think EPCOT could create a larger version of Club Cool by offering international Coca-Cola flavors around World Showcase.
Instead, Disney’s refillable mug program remains largely limited to hotel food courts.

Guests Want Disney To Expand the Program
Fans have continued pushing Disney to loosen restrictions on the mugs.
One common request involves Disney’s water parks. Disney once offered refillable mugs specifically for Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, and many guests believe the company should bring that idea back.
Others want Disney to extend the refill window beyond the current 14-day limit. Some guests argue that making the mugs valid for an entire year would make the purchase feel far more worthwhile.
More than anything, though, fans want the mugs to work inside the parks themselves.
Many families say they would not mind carrying the cups around if they could actually refill them throughout the day, as Universal guests can.

Disney Fans Want More Value From the Purchase
Disney’s refillable mugs still appeal to many guests thanks to unlimited refills and collectible designs.
But many visitors now feel the restrictions prevent the mugs from fitting naturally into a modern Disney vacation.
As Disney continues adding more premium offerings throughout Walt Disney World, guests increasingly expect those purchases to feel practical and flexible. Right now, many fans believe the refillable mug system falls short of that expectation.
