One of the most recognizable spaces in all of Walt Disney World Resort just got a subtle refresh that still honors the more than five decades of architectural history at Disney's Contemporary Resort.
The Grand Canyon Concourse Reveals Its Updated Ceiling
WDWNT reported on June 16 that the protective netting and black scrim that had been concealing a section of ceiling in the Grand Canyon Concourse since late 2025 have been removed, revealing completed work on one of the atrium's most visible structural elements. The scrim had been covering exposed beams and interior infrastructure near one of the concourse's skylights.
The finished result is a restored ceiling with newly installed tiles, positioned near the iconic Mary Blair mural and directly above the Fantasia Market merchandise area. The new tiles have been matched carefully to the surrounding design, preserving the mid-century modern and retro-futuristic character that has defined Disney's Contemporary Resort since it opened on October 1, 1971 — the same day as Magic Kingdom Park. The repair is virtually seamless, integrating naturally into a ceiling that guests have been looking up at for more than fifty years.
Part of a Much Longer Renovation
While the ceiling work appears to be wrapped up, it was just one completed phase of a refurbishment effort that Walt Disney World Resort has confirmed will continue through late 2027. Guests booking stays at Disney's Contemporary Resort between now and then should go in prepared for a hotel that is actively being worked on.
Walt Disney World Resort's official website advises guests that construction activity may be visible and audible during their stays. Noisy work is typically confined to daytime hours when most guests are at the theme parks, but some exterior views may be affected, and taking alternate routes through parts of the hotel may be necessary at certain points. Most Deluxe Resort amenities — including Monorail service — remain available throughout the ongoing work.
