For many Walt Disney World fans, the ride doesn't actually begin when the Doom Buggy starts moving. It begins the moment the doors close inside the Stretching Room.
That eerie pre-show has become one of the defining experiences of Magic Kingdom's Haunted Mansion, introducing guests to the attraction's spooky atmosphere before they ever encounter the famous 999 happy haunts. On Tuesday, however, visitors discovered that one of Disney's most celebrated show scenes was unexpectedly unavailable.

Instead of gathering inside for the full presentation, guests were escorted directly through the room because of technical difficulties affecting the attraction's iconic pre-show.
The Stretching Room Is Part of Disney History
The Haunted Mansion has earned its reputation as one of Disney's greatest attractions thanks to its blend of storytelling, special effects, humor, and unforgettable music. While every scene has its devoted fans, the Stretching Room has always stood apart.
As guests enter what appears to be an elegant portrait gallery, the walls begin to grow taller while the paintings slowly reveal something much darker than they first appeared to be. Combined with the Ghost Host's narration, the room creates an incredible sense of anticipation before visitors ever step inside the mansion itself.

It's one of those Disney moments that longtime fans know by heart. Even first-time visitors quickly realize they're experiencing something unique.
Because of that, many guests consider the Stretching Room to be just as memorable as the ride itself.
Guests Are Taking a Different Route
With the pre-show temporarily unavailable, Cast Members have been directing guests straight through the room and into the loading area.
The attraction itself remains open, so visitors can still experience the mansion's famous scenes, including Madame Leota, the ballroom ghosts, the attic, and the graveyard finale. The only missing piece is the theatrical introduction that has welcomed guests for decades.
While it may only add a few minutes to the overall experience, the Stretching Room plays a much larger role than simply holding crowds before boarding.
Disney Imagineers designed it to bridge the gap between the real world and the supernatural world inside the mansion. Without that transition, the attraction moves much more quickly from queue to ride vehicle.
Rumors Were Quickly Addressed
As news spread throughout the day, some Disney fans wondered whether the hanging corpse effect inside the Stretching Room had been removed.
That isn't the case.
Reports from Magic Kingdom confirmed that the effect remains in place and that the current downtime is unrelated to that famous visual. Instead, the issue stems from the technical operation of the room itself.

Meanwhile, Haunted Mansion continues welcoming guests despite exterior refurbishment work taking place around the attraction. Most of that construction has focused on routine maintenance, including updates to portions of the building's roof, rather than major changes to the attraction.
Technical issues occasionally affect attractions across Walt Disney World, particularly those featuring decades-old ride systems and elaborate show elements. While Disney works to restore the Stretching Room, guests can still enjoy nearly the entire Haunted Mansion experience. Still, there's no denying that one of Magic Kingdom's most iconic moments is temporarily missing, and for many Disney fans, that's a noticeable change.
