There is a reason Fantasmic is on almost every Hollywood Studios must-do list. The show is genuinely spectacular in a way that is hard to describe until you are sitting in that amphitheater watching fire and water and a 40-foot dragon come to life on a lagoon stage in the middle of the night. It is the kind of experience that makes you remember why Disney does what it does better than anyone else in the world. We have recommended it to every person in this community who has ever asked us what they absolutely cannot miss at Hollywood Studios, and we will keep recommending it.
But something happened at Fantasmic on the night of July 9th that we think this community deserves to know about, not to scare anyone away from the show, but because transparency matters and because understanding what happened actually helps put it in perspective.
What Happened at Disney
During the July 9th performance, a stray pyrotechnic effect misfired from the lagoon stage and traveled into the amphitheater seating area, where guests were watching the show. A guest captured the moment on video and shared it on Reddit, and the clip has been circulating online since. The small firework appears to fizzle out just before making contact with anyone in the stands. No one was injured. The show continued without interruption, and cast members kept the performance moving straight through to the finale without missing a beat.

What Fantasmic Involves
For anyone in this community who has not experienced it yet, Fantasmic is one of the crown jewels of Walt Disney World's nighttime entertainment. The show runs nightly in a large outdoor amphitheater that curves around a lagoon, giving every seat a clear view of the action. It follows Mickey Mouse as a sorcerer's apprentice whose dream is overtaken by Disney villains, including Maleficent as a towering 40-foot dragon, before imagination wins out in the end.
Characters from some of the most beloved Disney animated films appear throughout, including Moana, Frozen 2, Mulan, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King. The show weaves them all together through water projections, live stunts, choreography, music, and pyrotechnics that are integrated into the theatrical experience up close rather than launched into the sky from a distance.
Those pyrotechnics are part of what makes the show feel so immersive and so different from a standard fireworks spectacular. They are also what made this misfire land where it did.
How We Are Thinking About This
Here is the honest truth. Disney World is extraordinary at what it does. The level of care, precision, and training that goes into every single performance of Fantasmic is genuinely impressive. Most nights the show runs flawlessly and sends thousands of guests back to their hotels feeling like they just witnessed something magical. That is the norm and it should be acknowledged.
But Disney World is also a live entertainment operation running complex shows with real fire and real pyrotechnics in front of enormous crowds every single night. Mishaps are rare. They are not impossible. And when something like this happens it is worth knowing about, sitting with for a moment, and then keeping in its proper context.
Nobody was hurt. The show went on. And Fantasmic is still one of the most spectacular things you can do at Walt Disney World.
If you are planning to see it on your next visit, check showtimes on the My Disney Experience app, arrive early because the amphitheater fills up fast, and know that front row seats will get you a little wet from the water effects. The pyrotechnics are part of the magic. July 9 was an exception, not the rule, and we think this community can hold both of those things at once.
