Disney Guests Receive Unexpected Warning Ahead of August 2026 Stays

Be Prepared for Vacation Disruptions

For many Walt Disney World guests, some of the most memorable moments don't happen inside the parks at all.

They're found in the quieter experiences—the relaxing walk back to a resort after dinner, the peaceful sound of water lapping against a dock, or the slow glide of a ferry carrying families beneath the Florida sky toward an evening at Disney Springs. These transportation options have long been more than simple ways to get from Point A to Point B. They've become part of the vacation itself.

That sense of escape is especially strong at Disney's Old Key West Resort, where the Sassagoula River Cruise offers one of the most scenic rides anywhere on Walt Disney World property. For countless guests, boarding one of the boats feels like leaving the theme parks behind without leaving the magic behind. But now, that familiar routine may soon be changing.

Disney Is Quietly Preparing Guests for Possible Transportation Changes

Guests with upcoming August stays at Disney's Old Key West Resort have begun receiving notifications from Disney warning that transportation along the Sassagoula River could be affected during their vacations.

According to a message shared with guests, Disney says:

“As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the guest experience, refurbishment work will be taking place along the Sassagoula River Cruise boat route during your stay. During this time, boat service may be temporarily unavailable. If service is interrupted, complimentary bus transportation will be available to and from Disney Springs.”

Notably, Disney stops short of confirming that the boats will definitely be suspended, instead warning that service may become temporarily unavailable depending on construction activity.

While complimentary buses will help guests reach Disney Springs, longtime visitors know the experience simply isn't the same. The peaceful river cruise has become one of the signature perks of staying at Old Key West, offering a relaxing alternative to road transportation that many guests intentionally plan into their vacation days.

This Isn't Happening in Isolation

The notification also fits into a larger pattern of work taking place along the Sassagoula River corridor.

Back in March, Disney began boundary wall refurbishment projects along portions of the river near Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, Disney's Port Orleans Resort – Riverside, Disney's Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter, Disney's Old Key West Resort, and Disney Springs. At the time, Disney did not announce any planned interruptions to boat transportation.

More recently, refurbishment work has also been reported at the Disney Springs West Side Sassagoula boat dock, where the roof has been undergoing replacement.

Interestingly, that dock has remained closed ever since Walt Disney World suspended many transportation offerings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although visible progress has been made on the structure itself, the location has yet to reopen to guests.

Taken together, the ongoing projects suggest Disney continues investing in long-term infrastructure around one of its most unique transportation systems—even if that means short-term inconveniences for resort visitors.

For Many Guests, the Boat Ride Is Part of the Vacation

It's easy to dismiss transportation as merely functional, but Disney fans often see it very differently.

The Sassagoula River Cruise has developed something of a cult following over the years. Families use it as a relaxing break after long park days. Couples enjoy the quiet nighttime ride back to Old Key West after dinner at Disney Springs. Even first-time visitors frequently comment on how unexpectedly peaceful the journey feels compared to buses.

That emotional connection explains why even a possible interruption is generating attention.

What starts as a transportation update quickly becomes something more personal. Guests aren't simply losing a ride—they may temporarily lose one of the resort's defining experiences.

For travelers who specifically booked Old Key West because of its tranquil atmosphere and convenient boat access, the distinction matters.

Disney Springs Access Has Already Changed in Recent Years

The situation also comes against the backdrop of broader transportation adjustments around Disney Springs.

Several years ago, Walt Disney World eliminated both bus and boat access for guests who are not staying at Disney resort hotels. Today, transportation to Disney Springs via Disney-operated buses or boats is reserved exclusively for resort guests.

That policy made the Sassagoula River Cruise an even more valuable amenity for visitors staying at Old Key West and neighboring resorts.

Should temporary interruptions occur during August, buses will still provide access, but they'll replace one of the few remaining transportation experiences that feels uniquely “Disney” rather than simply practical.

Guests Will Be Watching Closely as August Approaches

At this point, Disney has not announced a full suspension schedule for the Sassagoula River Cruise, leaving many guests wondering whether their vacations will be affected or whether service interruptions will be limited to specific days or construction windows.

As refurbishment projects continue around the Sassagoula River, many visitors will likely keep a close eye on additional updates before they arrive. While infrastructure improvements are ultimately designed to enhance the guest experience, they also serve as a reminder that even Disney's most beloved traditions occasionally pause to make way for the future.

For now, guests staying at Disney's Old Key West Resort may want to prepare for a little extra flexibility—and hope that one of Walt Disney World's most relaxing boat rides is still waiting at the dock when their vacation begins.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
