Disney continues to make steady progress on Piston Peak, but the project's impact extends far beyond the future land itself. As construction expands across this section of Magic Kingdom, nearby attractions and buildings are also beginning to reflect the park's next chapter.
One of the latest developments is taking place beside The Haunted Mansion, where an old queue building is undergoing a noticeable change as Disney reshapes the surrounding area.
Piston Peak Is Driving Big Changes
When Piston Peak opens, it will completely transform the former Rivers of America into a landscape inspired by the national parks featured in Pixar's Cars. Disney has said guests can expect forests, waterfalls, mountains, rocky terrain, and architecture that captures the feeling of America's great outdoor destinations.
Instead of recreating Radiator Springs, Imagineers are building an original environment that draws inspiration from the films while giving Magic Kingdom something unique. That larger vision extends beyond the borders of the new land itself, making nearby improvements especially interesting to watch.
As construction continues, it appears Disney is paying close attention to how older areas connect with what guests will eventually experience inside Piston Peak.
Construction Continues Beside The Haunted Mansion
Just steps away from The Haunted Mansion, a familiar building has become one of the most active construction sites in this part of the park.
The structure, recognized by its tower with a sloped, peaked roof, previously served as an extension of the attraction's queue before construction walls blocked guest access. After crews demolished the nearby Mike Fink Keel Boats dock, they began expanding the building by adding a steel framework behind it.
That framework has since been enclosed with plywood, sheathing, and new exterior finishes. Fresh yellow paneling now covers much of the addition, while several white window shutters have also been installed.
Although the new siding stands out from the building's older blue-gray exterior, it closely matches the shingles on the nearby tower, giving the expanded section a more coordinated appearance.
Disney has not announced the building's future purpose. The project may be related to a permit filed earlier this year involving MLC Theming, but the company has not confirmed exactly how the finished space will be used. Guests have also noticed changes inside the attraction's queue, where construction walls recently came down, revealing rearranged gravestones in the cemetery scene.
The Mansion Is Receiving Attention Too
The construction isn't limited to the neighboring building.
The Haunted Mansion itself has remained open while Disney completes a lengthy exterior refurbishment. For months, themed scrims resembling the mansion covered portions of the attraction while crews worked behind them.
Most of those coverings have now been removed, although construction isn't complete. Sections of the queue and nearby walkways remain covered with wooden boards while additional work continues.
Together, the projects suggest Disney is refreshing more than just one building in this area.
Familiar Sights Have Already Disappeared
Many of the biggest changes connected to Piston Peak have already happened.
The Rivers of America has been drained, Tom Sawyer Island has permanently closed, and the Liberty Square Riverboat has ended operations. Those longtime Magic Kingdom experiences made way for the park's newest expansion and dramatically changed the appearance of this side of Frontierland.
Construction will continue for quite some time, making this one of the park's busiest areas.
Looking Toward What's Next
Disney has only confirmed the projects currently underway, but it has not shared every detail of how this area will ultimately look.
Given Disney's recent focus on updating and reimagining existing spaces throughout Walt Disney World, it wouldn't be surprising if additional work eventually reached pathways, queue areas, or other nearby structures surrounding The Haunted Mansion. For now, though, those possibilities remain just that—possibilities.

The Haunted Mansion continues to welcome guests, yet the surrounding scenery is steadily evolving. Between the neighboring building's expansion, the attraction's own exterior improvements, and the massive work taking place for Piston Peak, this historic corner of Magic Kingdom is gradually taking on a different look.
Disney hasn't revealed every piece of the finished puzzle, but each new construction milestone provides another glimpse at the future. By the time Piston Peak opens, guests can expect this section of the park to feel very different from the one they've known for years.
