Planning a day at Universal Orlando usually means deciding which attractions to ride first, where to eat, and how to fit everything into a single visit. It's easy to overlook one detail that can affect your day before it even begins: what you're bringing through security.
Several common items that many people pack without a second thought aren't allowed inside Universal Orlando Resort's theme parks or Universal CityWalk. Finding out after you've reached the entrance can mean an unexpected delay and, in some cases, a walk back to your car.
Before you zip up your backpack and head to the security checkpoint, it's worth knowing which belongings should stay behind.
Glass Bottles Should Stay at Home
Bringing your own drinks into the parks can be a smart way to stay hydrated, but glass containers aren't part of Universal Orlando's approved packing list.
The resort prohibits glass bottles and similar containers because broken glass can quickly become a safety concern in busy areas. With thousands of guests walking through attraction queues, restaurants, and pathways every day, even one broken bottle can create unnecessary problems.
Parents with young children do have one exception to the rule. Universal allows guests to bring glass baby food jars into the parks when needed.
For everyone else, plastic or metal reusable bottles are the better choice. They offer the same convenience while making the security process much easier.

Not Every Powered Device Is Permitted
Another restriction catches some guests off guard because it involves items many people use outside the parks every day.
Universal Orlando welcomes approved mobility devices, including powered wheelchairs and Electric Convenience Vehicles (ECVs), for guests who need accessibility assistance during their visit.
That policy does not extend to recreational powered transportation. Hoverboards, Segways, electric bicycles, and radio-controlled devices are not allowed inside the theme parks or Universal CityWalk.
The parks already handle heavy pedestrian traffic throughout the day, and limiting these devices helps maintain an environment where guests can move through crowded areas more comfortably.
If you're planning to bring any type of powered transportation device, it's a good idea to verify whether it qualifies before arriving at the resort.

Choose a Soft Cooler Instead
Food and drinks are another area where guests often prepare ahead of time, especially families planning to spend an entire day at the parks.
While bringing approved refreshments can be helpful, Universal Orlando does not allow hard-sided coolers through its security checkpoints.
Instead, visitors should use soft-sided bags if they need to carry snacks, bottled water, or other approved food items.
Hard coolers are more difficult to transport through crowded walkways and attraction queues, and they can also take up valuable space throughout the parks. Soft-sided coolers are much easier to manage while still giving guests a convenient way to carry essentials during the day.
Making that simple switch before leaving for Universal can help prevent delays at the entrance.

Clothing Choices Matter, Too
Your backpack isn't the only thing security may evaluate before you enter the parks. What you wear can also affect whether you're allowed through the front gate.
Universal Orlando Resort has dress code guidelines intended to maintain a comfortable environment for everyone visiting the resort.
Face coverings that completely hide a guest's identity generally aren't allowed unless they're medically necessary or otherwise approved. Certain costume pieces, including veils and garments with long trains, may also create safety concerns in crowded areas.
The resort also expects guests to wear clothing that provides appropriate coverage. Apparel featuring explicit language or offensive graphics can violate the dress code, and clothing with excessive exposure may also result in guests being turned away until appropriate attire is worn.
If you're visiting during a special event, reviewing any event-specific costume policies ahead of time can help avoid surprises.

Spending a Few Extra Minutes Can Make the Day Easier
Security at Universal Orlando is designed to keep guests moving while maintaining a safe environment throughout the resort. Most visitors pass through without any problems, especially when they've checked the rules before leaving for the parks.
Taking a quick look at Universal's prohibited-items policy can save valuable vacation time and help eliminate unnecessary stress at the entrance.
Glass bottles, recreational powered devices, hard-sided coolers, and clothing that doesn't meet the resort's guidelines are all examples of everyday items that can unexpectedly disrupt the start of a visit.
Packing with those policies in mind means you'll spend less time dealing with security and more time enjoying everything Universal Orlando has waiting once you're inside.
