Walt Disney World has a new president as of yesterday, and he used to drive the Jungle Cruise.
Not a metaphor. An actual skipper.
Here is where things stand. Jeff Vahle worked his last day on July 31, closing the book on 36 years with The Walt Disney Company. He got the presidency in 2020, which is to say he was handed the reins at the absolute worst possible moment, and he dragged it through the pandemic era into genuine momentum. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, TRON Lightcycle / Run, Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana, Tiana's Bayou Adventure, and the 50th anniversary. All him.
Tough act. Fans have been eyeing this transition nervously for months.
Now it is done. Joe Schott took over on August 3, and he has finally said something publicly.
The Statement
Schott kicked off his tenure with a LinkedIn post looking back on nearly 45 years at the company, thanking Vahle, and laying out what he cares about.

“When I took a part-time job as a skipper on the Jungle Cruise nearly 45 years ago, I never could have imagined where the journey would lead from there. I've gone from Florida to Disney destinations around the world and back. Returning to the place where it all began feels a lot like coming home.
I am honored to be President of Walt Disney World during such an exciting time. With significant investments and growth underway across our property, we have tremendous opportunities ahead. My focus is simple: support our Cast Members, deliver exceptional Guest experiences, and build on our strong foundation.
I also want to thank Jeff Vahle for his leadership and stewardship of Walt Disney World. He has helped shape the resort's success, strengthen our culture, and position us for the opportunities ahead. I am honored to follow in his footsteps.
Thank you for the warm welcome. I am grateful for the opportunity and excited for what lies ahead.”
Yes, He Really Was a Disney World Skipper
That opening line is not slick corporate storytelling. It is just his actual biography.
Schott grew up in Orlando and started at Disney as a part-time Jungle Cruise skipper at Magic Kingdom. The guy running Walt Disney World today once earned a paycheck telling corny jokes on the rivers of adventure.
And it gets even better alongside Vahle's story. Vahle came in as an engineer at Magic Kingdom in 1990 and walked out 36 years later, having overseen roughly 80,000 cast members. Schott came in on a boat and now holds the top job at the same resort where he first clocked in.
Two guys who started on the ground. Same office at the end.
What Happened in Between
Four-plus decades produced one of the more well-traveled resumes in the company.
He supported Tokyo Disney Resort through Walt Disney Attractions Japan. He was Chief Operating Officer during the celebrated revitalization of Disneyland Paris. Then six years as president and general manager of Shanghai Disney Resort, running a major expansion that included the world's first Zootopia-themed land, watching the place blow past 100 million guests in under a decade, and dealing with the COVID closures.
Most recently, he ran Disney Signature Experiences, which covers Disney Cruise Line, Disney Vacation Club, Adventures by Disney, National Geographic Expeditions, Storyliving by Disney, and Golden Oak. The Disney Destiny and the Disney Adventure both launched under him.
Disney announced the appointment back in May.
He Is Inheriting a Disney World Construction Zone
Timing is the whole story here. Schott arrives right as Walt Disney World enters another giant expansion push, and the in-park list is long.
Magic Kingdom is getting the Cars-inspired Piston Peak area plus a Disney Villains land.
Disney's Hollywood Studios is getting Monstropolis and a suspended Monsters, Inc. roller coaster.
Disney's Animal Kingdom is getting the Tropical Americas land with Encanto and Indiana Jones attractions.
Billions of dollars are already moving. Which cuts both ways for a new president. The vision is basically set. The execution is now on him.
Is He the Right Guy
Nobody can call that yet. Give him a year.
But the resume fits this exact moment. Frontline operations experience, which matters a lot when your first stated priority is cast members. Deep international chops from three overseas resorts during make-or-break stretches. And fresh experience wrangling aggressive growth at Disney Cruise Line, which lines up neatly with a resort in the middle of a building spree.
He is an operator who keeps getting handed parks in transition and keeps leaving them in better shape.
Bonus timing. He starts right as the 2026 D23 Expo hits, which could drop a pile of announcements in his lap immediately.
What Everyone Should Be Watching
His stated focus, in his own words: support cast members, deliver exceptional guest experiences, build on the foundation.
Correct priorities to say out loud. Whether they become decisions guests actually feel is the real story of the next twelve months, especially on the cast member side, where recent property-wide changes have landed badly with the people affected.
For now, the skipper has the wheel.
