Disney Reimagines Figment After 43 Years for New 2027 Debut

Entirely New Character to Debut in 6 Months

Disney has a new version of Figment headed to Disney Lorcana in 2027, giving EPCOT’s purple dragon a fresh identity inside the trading card game. The change is notable for a character whose visual identity has been closely tied to Walt Disney World since his 1983 debut.

What Disney has not announced is equally important. There is no verified announcement that Walt Disney World is removing or redesigning the Figment seen in Journey Into Imagination With Figment at EPCOT. Disney’s official attraction page continues to list the ride and describes Figment as its playful dragon guide.

That distinction matters: the confirmed development concerns a new Lorcana “glimmer,” not a replacement of Figment across Walt Disney World.

Figment’s Disney Lorcana Overhaul Creates a New Version of the Character

Disney Lorcana is built around alternate interpretations of familiar Disney characters. In the game’s terminology, those characters are “glimmers,” magical versions summoned by players known as Illumineers.

Disney has previously explained that Lorcana glimmers can take different forms. Storyborn characters remain close to their established stories, while Dreamborn and Floodborn versions can reimagine familiar characters to fit a set’s narrative or theme. Disney Parks Blog has also described the game as a world where players encounter both familiar and reimagined Disney characters.

That framework gives Figment room to change without rewriting the version guests know from EPCOT. A redesigned Figment card can be dramatically different while remaining specific to Lorcana’s fictional universe.

For Disney fans who have watched Figment’s appearance evolve over the years, that separation is especially important.

The EPCOT Figment Dates Back to 1983

Figment first appeared in the original Journey Into Imagination at EPCOT in 1983 alongside Dreamfinder. The character survived major changes to the pavilion even when the attraction around him did not.

Disney replaced the original ride with Journey Into YOUR Imagination in 1999, a version that removed Figment from the central role. In 2002, Disney opened Journey Into Imagination With Figment, restoring the dragon as a major character.

That history explains why any suggestion that Disney is “replacing” Figment at Walt Disney World carries much more weight than a trading-card redesign. The character is deeply connected to the identity of the Imagination Pavilion and EPCOT itself.

Inside the Magic has previously covered the current attraction’s operational history and the changes that have shaped the pavilion over the decades.

A Lorcana Glimmer Does Not Mean the EPCOT Ride Is Changing

For now, guests planning a Walt Disney World trip should not interpret the Figment Disney Lorcana reveal as an attraction closure, refurbishment, or character replacement.

Walt Disney World’s official Journey Into Imagination With Figment page still presents Figment as the guide through Dr. Nigel Channing’s sensory laboratories. Disney has not tied the Lorcana design to a refurbishment of the ride or announced that the EPCOT character will adopt the new look.

That is significant because speculation around the Imagination Pavilion has persisted for years. Inside the Magic has covered past questions about possible Figment changes as well as calls for a new Figment attraction.

None of those developments turns a Lorcana redesign into confirmation of a park overhaul.

Why Figment Fits Disney Lorcana

Figment may be unusually well suited to Lorcana because transformation is already central to the game.

Disney Parks Blog explains that Lorcana launched in 2023 and allows Illumineers to summon glimmers of Disney characters. In a separate official explanation of the game’s creative process, Disney detailed how Dreamborn and Floodborn glimmers can alter a character to fit the theme of a particular set.

That makes a substantially reworked Figment less surprising in Lorcana than it would be inside EPCOT. The trading card game regularly uses alternate identities and settings to reinterpret recognizable characters.

The crossover also extends Figment beyond his traditional Walt Disney World setting. His profile has remained particularly visible through EPCOT merchandise and seasonal programming, including the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts, where Figment has become a recurring presence.

For Lorcana players, the larger question is what the new glimmer will actually do in the game. Its ink color, abilities, classifications, rarity and final card text should be treated as unknown unless Disney or Ravensburger publishes those details.

What Disney Fans Should Watch Heading Into 2027

The verified story is narrower, but arguably more interesting, than a supposed removal at EPCOT: Disney is preparing to reinterpret one of its most park-specific characters for Lorcana.

That creates a bridge between two audiences. Longtime EPCOT fans get a new interpretation of a character introduced more than four decades ago, while Lorcana players gain another piece of Disney Parks history inside the tabletop game.

Disney maintains a dedicated Lorcana news hub for release dates and product updates. Until additional official details appear there, through D23, or from Ravensburger, the scope of Figment’s 2027 redesign should remain limited to what has actually been announced.

At EPCOT, Journey Into Imagination With Figment remains listed by Walt Disney World. In Lorcana, however, a different Figment is preparing to take shape. The next meaningful reveal will be the card itself and whether Disney provides a name, artwork, abilities, release set, or other details showing just how far this new glimmer departs from the dragon fans have known since 1983.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
