Report: Disney Suspends ‘Avengers’ Movie After Recent MCU Reset Revealed

Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) has entered a production pause, with filming not expected to pick back up until close to the end of September, according to Filmbase.

The five-week gap lands at an odd moment for Marvel Studios, which is simultaneously trying to close out post-production on Avengers: Doomsday (2026) while getting its 2027 follow-up off the ground.

Whether cameras had officially started rolling on Secret Wars before the break is still murky. Filmbase describes the production as currently on hiatus, but other outlets have offered conflicting accounts of where exactly the shoot stood beforehand. Marvel has said nothing publicly to settle the discrepancy, keeping the film's status as opaque as its marketing has been so far.

The break follows closely on the heels of remarks from directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who spoke with Collider shortly after San Diego Comic-Con in late July. At the time, the brothers described Doomsday as being in its final stages while Secret Wars was only just entering prep.

“We're deep into finishing the movie, into finishing Doomsday,” Anthony Russo said. “All of the grace notes, the music, working with Alan Silvestri, sound mix, creating Alan's incredible original music. Wait until you experience what he's cooked up for Doom. That, and then we're prepping. We're prepping Secret Wars. So, it's a complicated time in our lives, but thrilling.”

When asked for a firmer timeline on when Secret Wars would begin shooting, Russo declined to give specifics, though he hinted a start was close: “Soon. So soon it makes us sweat a little bit.”

If production did begin shortly after that comment, the current pause suggests it didn't get far before hitting a scheduling wall. Marvel hasn't explained the reasoning behind the break, leaving open whether it's a planned gap built around a massive ensemble shoot or the result of Doomsday‘s finishing touches still eating into resources meant for its sequel.

That finishing work carries its own weight. Doomsday features a sprawling cast that crosses studio lines entirely, pairing Chris Hemsworth's Thor and Anthony Mackie's Captain America with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen's returning turns as Professor X and Magneto from the old 20th Century Fox X-Men series. Robert Downey Jr. is also back, cast not as Tony Stark but as Victor Von Doom, a role first teased in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) post-credits scene. Some reporting suggests his take on Doom leans more complicated than villainous, with possible ties to the consequences of Steve Rogers' choices at the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Questions about the film's overall size haven't gone away either. The Hot Mic has reported that Doomsday could run close to three hours, and that Marvel has internally discussed splitting Secret Wars into two separate films to manage its Multiverse-heavy plot. Nothing has been confirmed by either Marvel or Disney, but such a split would turn the current two-film plan into a trilogy.

Unconfirmed leaks tied to Doomsday‘s ending reportedly point to a setup for Battleworld, the conceptual world expected to serve as the backdrop for Secret Wars. Insider Alex Perez, writing for The Cosmic Circus (via Comic Book Movie), described a possible framing for that opening: “Aside from a literal handful of heroes and villains, practically everyone will be under Doom's control, living in a more medieval version of what Wanda did in Westview. Literally think WandaVision meets ‘What If…? The Avengers Assembled in 1602,' and that's the introductory premise to Secret Wars.”

Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff has yet to be confirmed as part of the cast, notably absent given her standing within the franchise.

None of the plot, casting, or production details discussed here has been officially verified by Marvel Studios, and all are subject to change once filming resumes later this year.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
