Another piece of Disney's Hollywood Studios is changing, and this time, the work is happening around one of the park's most recognizable dining locations.
Guests walking near The Hollywood Brown Derby can already see construction changing the restaurant's exterior. What was once a familiar outdoor setup is being replaced with a new structure designed to make the space more comfortable for guests.
And considering The Hollywood Brown Derby has been around since the park opened in 1989, any noticeable change to this corner of Hollywood Studios is bound to get attention.
Major Addition Takes Shape at The Hollywood Brown Derby
Disney is currently refurbishing the exterior of The Hollywood Brown Derby, and crews have installed framing for a new canopy above the outdoor lounge.
The framing runs along the side of the restaurant before extending outward toward the walkway. Once Disney finishes the project, the canopy will provide shade for the outdoor lounge area beside the restaurant's main dining room.
It's a practical addition, especially at a theme park where guests routinely deal with Florida's intense sunshine and afternoon rain.
It will also noticeably change the appearance of the area.
The Hollywood Brown Derby has remained a familiar sight throughout decades of changes at Hollywood Studios. The restaurant debuted alongside the park in 1989, back when guests knew it as Disney-MGM Studios.
While the restaurant itself isn't going anywhere, its outdoor surroundings are getting a new look.
Guests Can't Access the Lounge Right Now
For now, rolling hedge planters surround the construction area and prevent guests from accessing the usual lounge space.
However, Disney hasn't completely eliminated the outdoor operation during the refurbishment.
The patio has temporarily moved to the former Starring Rolls Bakery location. That area currently offers a walk-up bar along with shaded tables for guests.
Meanwhile, The Hollywood Brown Derby's main dining room continues operating normally for lunch and dinner.
That means guests can still dine at the restaurant while Disney works outside.
Hollywood Studios Keeps Evolving
This latest project might not have the scale of a new attraction, but it's another noticeable change for longtime Hollywood Studios visitors.
The park has evolved considerably since opening 37 years ago. Many original locations have disappeared or changed dramatically, making places like The Hollywood Brown Derby increasingly important connections to the park's original identity.
The restaurant remains, but Disney is updating the area around it.
Once finished, the new canopy should provide guests with a more comfortable outdoor space while giving this longstanding corner of Hollywood Studios a refreshed appearance.
Disney hasn't announced when the refurbishment will be completed.
Until then, construction barriers will remain part of the scenery outside The Hollywood Brown Derby. When they finally disappear, guests should find a familiar Hollywood Studios location with a major new addition overhead.
