Walt Disney World has filed another Haunted Mansion construction permit tied to the Magic Kingdom attraction, just weeks after the Liberty Square landmark emerged from a months-long exterior refurbishment. The filing is notable because its scope is described only as “General Construction,” leaving the precise work undisclosed.
But the permit does not confirm that Disney is gutting, retheming, closing, or substantially changing the ride experience. For now, it establishes one thing: more work is authorized at the Haunted Mansion address after a highly visible refurbishment.
New Haunted Mansion Construction Permit Leaves the Scope Unclear
The Notice of Commencement lists MLC Theming for “General Construction” at 1600 Magic Kingdom Drive, the address associated with The Haunted Mansion. The filing was made through Disney’s Facility Asset Management operation rather than Walt Disney Imagineering, according to the permit information reported on August 28.
Facility Asset Management commonly handles property upkeep and maintenance, so its involvement does not, by itself, point to a creative overhaul. “General Construction” is too broad to establish whether crews will work inside the show building, outside the attraction, on infrastructure, or on remaining refurbishment items.

Disney Just Finished a Major Exterior Refurbishment
The timing is what makes the new permit especially interesting. Throughout much of 2026, scaffolding and themed scrims covered large portions of the Haunted Mansion facade while crews worked on the exterior. By late July and early August, those barriers were coming down and the refreshed mansion was returning to view.
Inside the Magic documented the removal of the Haunted Mansion scrims and later the attraction’s restored exterior appearance. Earlier work included changes to exterior finishes and the cupola, but the attraction continued operating through much of the visible project.
Disney’s official Haunted Mansion attraction page currently lists Haunted Mansion as an operating Magic Kingdom attraction and describes the familiar experience: guests board Doom Buggies and travel through the mansion’s haunted chambers, including Madame Leota’s séance room and the ghostly graveyard. Disney has not announced a new Haunted Mansion storyline, wholesale interior replacement, or major new refurbishment tied to this latest filing.
Does the Permit Mean Disney Is Gutting Haunted Mansion?
There is currently no verified evidence that it does. A construction permit can be an early clue to work Disney has not publicly detailed, but this filing does not identify new scenes, removed effects, replacement ride systems, a retheme, or an interior demolition project.
That distinction is important for a legacy attraction. Haunted Mansion has a recognizable collection of scenes and characters, and even relatively contained updates can draw attention. Disney has changed the Walt Disney World version before — including adding the Hatbox Ghost — without replacing the fundamental ride experience.
For guests worried that the new paperwork signals a secret total overhaul, the evidence available now does not support that conclusion. The most accurate reading is narrower: Disney has authorized additional general construction at the attraction, and the exact purpose remains unknown.
Haunted Mansion Sits Beside a Changing Part of Magic Kingdom
The permit also arrives while the western side of Magic Kingdom is undergoing redevelopment. Disney is building Piston Peak National Park as part of what the company calls the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history, with the new Cars-inspired area extending the storytelling progression from Liberty Square into Frontierland.
Disney’s August 2026 Piston Peak update says trees will create a natural barrier between the off-road rally and other areas of Frontierland and Liberty Square. That makes the physical environment around Haunted Mansion relevant as sightlines, guest circulation, landscaping, and nearby infrastructure evolve.
Inside the Magic has followed construction moving closer to the Haunted Mansion area and changes involving the attraction’s extended queue. Disney has also officially confirmed Villains Land for Magic Kingdom, with two major attractions, dining, and shopping planned for the expansion.
None of those projects proves this permit is connected to Piston Peak or Villains Land. They do, however, provide context: Haunted Mansion now occupies the edge of one of Magic Kingdom’s most active construction zones.
What Haunted Mansion Fans Should Watch Next
For now, guests have no confirmed Haunted Mansion closure to plan around, and Disney’s official website continues to present the attraction as available. The permit alone is not a closure notice and should not be treated as one.
The next clues will be physical construction activity, additional public filings, changes to Disney’s operating calendar, or an announcement from Walt Disney World. Until one of those provides a clearer scope, claims that Disney is secretly gutting the Haunted Mansion remain speculation rather than confirmed news.
What is confirmed is that work at the mansion is not necessarily over just because the exterior scrims are gone. After months of visible refurbishment, another vaguely worded construction filing means the 999 happy haunts may still have contractors for company — even if Disney has not yet said exactly what they are doing.
