The area surrounding the Haunted Mansion just got a little emptier, as Walt Disney World Resort tears down another structure to clear space for its sprawling Piston Peak National Park project at Magic Kingdom Park.
Building Piston Peak National Park
Walt Disney Imagineering first revealed plans for a Cars (2006)-themed addition to Frontierland at D23 Expo 2024. The new area, Piston Peak National Park, is set to include two attractions along with landscaping inspired by America's national parks.
Construction required the permanent closure of the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat back in 2025. Behind construction walls, crews drained the former waterway and cleared the land to make way for what's coming next.
Just weeks ago at D23 Expo 2026, Imagineers confirmed the names of the two attractions coming to Piston Peak National Park: Cars Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spin-Along.
Another Structure Comes Down
WDWNT reported on Thursday that crews had demolished the former Ichabod's Landing gift shop, a building that once sat directly beside the entrance to the Haunted Mansion attraction. This follows an earlier demolition of the nearby Mike Fink Keel Boats landing, which had previously served the now-defunct Liberty Square Riverboat.
Only one building remains standing near that stretch, situated just to the right of where Ichabod's Landing and the Mike Fink Keel Boats landing once stood. Interestingly, Walt Disney World Resort has added a new framework to that structure in recent months, suggesting the building will likely remain in place once Piston Peak National Park opens.
Ichabod's Landing was formerly known as the Keelboat Shop and eventually closed due to overcrowding, as the growing Haunted Mansion line made the space too congested to operate as a merchandise location. The neighboring building, which still stands, was often used as overflow space for that same queue.
This latest demolition follows closely behind Disney's recent decision to block off the entire Frontierland boardwalk, another move that clears the way for Piston Peak National Park's continued development.
