Disney is celebrating artists and the craft of animation, but one of its signature drawing experiences uses an Audio-Animatronic Olaf and prerecorded instruction rather than a live artist leading each class. Whether it represents a broader move away from human creative labor is not something Disney has said.
The Magic of Disney Animation Opens September 14
Disney’s official park listing confirms The Magic of Disney Animation opens September 14, 2026. The experience occupies the reimagined Walt Disney Studios area at Hollywood Studios, where Animation Courtyard and Star Wars Launch Bay previously stood.
The original Magic of Disney Animation was tied to the park’s working-studio identity, when guests could see aspects of animation production in Florida. Disney says the new building takes inspiration from the Roy E. Disney Animation Building in Burbank, including the familiar Sorcerer Mickey hat. Rather than functioning as a working animation facility, however, this version turns the studio process into themed guest experiences.
Off the Page! Turns Animation Departments Into Character Sets
Off the Page! makes that studio-process concept especially literal. Disney says its character spaces represent different animation departments, pairing familiar characters with settings tied to how animated films are made.
Mulan may appear in Story before an oversized storyboard panel, while Rapunzel may appear in Layout against a setting inspired by the multiplane camera. Disney has also announced Chip ’n’ Dale for Hand-Drawn Animation, Donald and Daisy for Computer Animation, Goofy for Lighting, and Stitch for Effects.
For Disney adults who miss the park’s stronger studio identity, the appeal may be less about a conventional meet-and-greet and more about seeing production vocabulary brought back into Hollywood Studios. Olaf Draws! Puts Technology Between Guests and Disney Artists
Olaf Draws! is where the concept becomes more complicated. An Audio-Animatronic Olaf hosts the room, with original dialogue recorded by Josh Gad, while Disney Animation artists provide prerecorded step-by-step drawing instruction.
Those artists are not anonymous. Disney’s announced roster includes Eric Goldberg teaching Genie, Fawn Veerasunthorn teaching Stitch, Samantha Vilfort teaching Moana, Hyun Min Lee teaching Minnie Mouse, and other directors, animators and story artists guiding different character sketches.
It would be inaccurate to say Disney has confirmed that automation is replacing animation jobs here. The company has made no such announcement, and the experience explicitly credits human artists and uses their instruction.
Still, Olaf Draws! reflects a broader theme-park model worth watching: a repeatable, technology-led presentation can deliver a consistent experience without requiring the featured artist to be physically present for every class. For guests concerned about automation, artificial intelligence and corporate cost-cutting in creative industries, that structure may feel symbolic. But symbolism is not evidence of a Disney labor strategy, and the two should not be conflated.

Drawn to Wonderland Leans Into Mary Blair’s Art
Elsewhere, Drawn to Wonderland puts a very different kind of human artistry front and center. The indoor play area is inspired by Disney Legend Mary Blair’s original concept art for Alice in Wonderland, translating her bold shapes and colors into a physical environment for younger guests.
Disney says the playground includes spaces inspired by the Mad Tea Party, the Mad Hatter’s house, the Queen of Hearts’ rose garden and Tulgey Wood. That gives families a non-ride option inside Hollywood Studios and broadens a park lineup often associated with major rides and shows.

What Disney’s New Animation Experience Actually Says About Art
The most revealing thing about The Magic of Disney Animation may be that Disney is trying to have both technology and human artistry occupy the same room. Audio-Animatronics, prerecorded video, interactive effects and character environments deliver the experience, while named animators, Mary Blair’s design work and the language of traditional production supply much of its creative authority.
That makes the project more nuanced than a simple “robots replace artists” narrative. What remains unknown is whether this presentation model will influence future drawing experiences, staffing, or other creative attractions at Walt Disney World.
Guests will get their first regular opportunity to judge that balance when The Magic of Disney Animation officially opens September 14 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Until Disney provides evidence of staffing reductions or a broader automation policy connected to the attraction, the defensible story is the one visible in the preview: Disney is using sophisticated themed technology to package, mediate and celebrate human animation work — all at the same time.
