“Your local council can give each parent a fine of £80, rising to £160 if you do not pay within 21 days. From the 2024 to 2025 school year, each parent will only get up to 2 fines for the same child in a 3-year period. If you get a second fine in 3 years it will be £160. If you do not pay the fine in 28 days you may be taken to court for keeping your child out of school. If your child is off school 3 or more times within the 3 years you will not be fined but may be taken to court.”
And if things escalate to court, parents could be looking at a Parenting Order or “a fine of up to £2,500 [(approx. $3,300)], a community order or a jail sentence up to 3 months.”
A Real-Life Example: £640 and a Heatwave Twist
One West Midlands family recently shared their experience after being fined £640 (about $861) for taking their two kids out of school for a Disney World trip. What makes this story stand out is the added wrinkle: the school itself had closed or reduced hours because of extreme heat in the UK at the time.
“The school was also closed or open partially due to the heatwave, so we are being fined for our kids being off school when others were allowed because it was too hot,” the mother explained, speaking with The Sun.
She also broke down the cost comparison that led to their decision: “We went in term time in June because the price is triple the cost to go during the holidays […] I priced up for Easter holidays and the holiday was coming to £12,000 just for the flights and hotel – and that's without park tickets on top.” Ultimately, the family's June trip ran about £7,500 total, £3,000 for flights and lodging, and £4,500 for park tickets.
A council representative offered this response through The Sun: “We recognize that there is financial pressure on families and term-time holidays may be tempting. But attendance at school is vitally important for children to reach their potential, and to gain the skills and qualifications that will give them the best start in life and the best future.”
