A trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom can look very different depending on what happens after guests walk through the gates.
The park already has fewer traditional rides to work with than the other Walt Disney World theme parks. Add a massive construction project that has taken an entire former land out of the equation, and there is less room for plans to go sideways.
Unfortunately, there is one situation that can quickly make that limited attraction lineup even smaller.
For guests planning to spend a full day at Animal Kingdom, it could be worth deciding which experiences matter most before arriving.
Animal Kingdom Can Lose Most of Its Rides
Animal Kingdom currently has six traditional rides following the closures of DINOSAUR and TriceraTop Spin: Avatar Flight of Passage, Na’vi River Journey, Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain, Kali River Rapids, Kilimanjaro Safaris, and the Wildlife Express Train.
That lineup becomes particularly vulnerable when stormy conditions affect outdoor operations.
Four of those six experiences can become unavailable during inclement weather. If all four stop operating, Animal Kingdom temporarily loses roughly 67% of its traditional ride lineup.
That is a much bigger problem here than it can be elsewhere around Walt Disney World.
Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios all have numerous indoor attractions that can continue operating through many periods of bad weather. Animal Kingdom has other things to do, but guests primarily interested in rides have fewer options.
That makes each closure feel considerably more significant.
Four Attractions Can Drop Off the Board
The attractions vulnerable to outdoor conditions include some major pieces of an Animal Kingdom day.
Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain is one of the park’s biggest thrill rides. Kali River Rapids can also suspend operations during inclement weather.
Kilimanjaro Safaris can also become unavailable, taking another major experience off the board. The Wildlife Express Train can also be affected, removing another transportation option inside the park.
If all four become unavailable, only two traditional rides from the park’s current lineup generally remain operating: Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey.
Both attractions sit inside Pandora – The World of Avatar and operate indoors.
That can make Pandora particularly important when outdoor operations become disrupted. With fewer rides available elsewhere, guests may turn to the remaining options, along with shows, restaurants, shops, and other covered experiences.
And right now, Animal Kingdom has another issue that could make those closures even more disruptive.
Construction Has Already Taken Away an Entire Area
Disney is currently transforming the former DinoLand U.S.A. area into Tropical Americas.
The new 11-acre land is scheduled to open in 2027 and will eventually bring major experiences inspired by Encanto (2021) and Indiana Jones to Animal Kingdom.
Until then, guests have to deal with the construction phase.
DINOSAUR and TriceraTop Spin are already gone, and the former DinoLand area is unavailable as Disney prepares its replacement.
That leaves less guest-accessible space when outdoor rides are no longer operating.
Instead of spreading throughout the former DinoLand area, guests may find themselves looking toward Pandora, indoor entertainment, restaurants, shops, animal experiences, and other available parts of the park.
The situation makes Animal Kingdom’s already-small ride lineup feel even smaller.
Disney World Prices Add Another Layer
The issue becomes more noticeable when considering what families may spend on a Walt Disney World vacation.
Guests can pay for park tickets, hotels, food, merchandise, transportation, and Lightning Lane access. Depending on the vacation, those expenses can quickly add up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
Losing four rides during part of an Animal Kingdom day can therefore sting.
There are still plenty of alternatives. Festival of the Lion King, Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!, Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, animal trails, and character experiences can help fill the day.
But guests arriving primarily for rides may have to change their plans quickly.
Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Hollywood Studios simply have more indoor attractions when outdoor operations are disrupted.
A Backup Plan Could Make a Big Difference
Animal Kingdom is undergoing a major transformation, but Tropical Americas will not open until 2027.
Until then, guests are visiting during an unusual period when the park has a smaller ride roster and an entire former land is under construction.
Prioritizing Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain, Kali River Rapids, Kilimanjaro Safaris, and the Wildlife Express Train while conditions allow could help visitors avoid missing those experiences.
Guests can also monitor attraction statuses in the My Disney Experience app as they change throughout the day.
Animal Kingdom still has plenty to offer beyond rides. But when four of six traditional rides become unavailable, roughly 67% of that lineup disappears.
For anyone heading to the park, having another plan ready could make a major difference.
