Johnny Depp is stepping back into the spotlight alongside someone Pirates of the Caribbean fans should immediately recognize.
It has been nine years since Depp last appeared as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017). Although his future with Disney remains uncertain, Depp is moving forward with another major theatrical project.
This time, he's bringing a former Pirates co-star with him.
Depp and Penélope Cruz are officially reuniting for Day Drinker (2027), marking their fourth movie together. A trailer has now offered audiences a closer look at their latest collaboration ahead of its theatrical release on March 26, 2027.
Depp and Cruz Are Back Together
Directed by Marc Webb, Day Drinker (2027) puts Depp and Cruz into a much different world than the one they shared aboard pirate ships.
Madelyn Cline plays a bartender working aboard a private yacht who crosses paths with a mysterious guest played by Depp. That encounter eventually connects them with a criminal figure portrayed by Cruz.
The supporting cast includes Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle, while Zach Dean wrote the screenplay.

Although Day Drinker (2027) gives Depp and Cruz a fresh story, the two actors have plenty of history together.
They first appeared opposite each other in Blow (2001), with Depp playing George Jung and Cruz portraying Mirtha. They reunited a decade later for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), where Cruz's Angelica shared a complicated history with Captain Jack Sparrow.
Depp and Cruz worked together again in Murder on the Orient Express (2017), making Day Drinker (2027) their fourth shared film.
What About Captain Jack Sparrow?
Naturally, Depp's latest Hollywood project arrives while fans continue watching for news about his potential return to Pirates of the Caribbean.
Nothing is official.
Disney has not announced Depp's return as Captain Jack Sparrow, and fans should be careful about treating ongoing discussions as confirmation.
Still, the possibility appears to remain on the table. Longtime franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed in August 2026 that discussions with Depp were taking place as work continued on a screenplay.
“We’re talking to Johnny. We’re working on a screenplay. Hopefully we can get this done,” Bruckheimer said.
That's an encouraging development for fans who have spent years hoping Depp might eventually play Jack Sparrow again, but a conversation doesn't guarantee a deal.
For now, Day Drinker (2027) is the confirmed reunion.
Depp and Cruz will officially share the big screen again when the movie arrives March 26, 2027. Whether Depp's next reunion takes him back to the world of Captain Jack Sparrow remains one of Disney's biggest unanswered questions.
