Universal Orlando Hotels Ranked: Where Your Money Actually Goes Furthest

There's a major difference between Universal Orlando Resort's “best” hotel and the hotel that gives you the most for your money.

That's what makes choosing between Universal's 11 hotels surprisingly difficult.

You could splurge on Portofino Bay Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel, or Royal Pacific Resort and receive Universal Express Unlimited for participating attractions at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

Or you could potentially find one of Universal's cheaper hotels around the low-$100 range during certain periods and put those savings toward the rest of your vacation.

Neither choice is automatically wrong.

Once price becomes part of the ranking, however, Universal's cheaper hotels start fighting well above their weight.

Starting at the Bottom

Our ranking begins with Universal Terra Luna Resort at No. 11 and Universal Stella Nova Resort at No. 10.

Both expanded Universal's lower-priced hotel lineup, giving guests even more options outside the resort's expensive Signature Collection.

Stella Nova gets an additional boost from its walking path to Epic Universe, while Terra Luna offers a large resort-style pool area.

Next comes Universal Endless Summer Resort – Dockside Inn and Suites at No. 9 and Surfside Inn and Suites at No. 8.

This is where families should start paying attention.

Both Endless Summer hotels offer suites, meaning families can gain additional space without automatically moving into Universal's most expensive hotel categories.

When you're traveling with several people, that matters.

The Middle of the Ranking Gets Interesting

Universal Aventura Hotel takes our No. 7 position.

Aventura has a more modern, streamlined feel than some of Universal's heavily themed resorts. It also features a rooftop bar and provides another option for travelers who want to keep their hotel spending relatively controlled.

Cabana Bay Beach Resort comes in at No. 6.

For families, Cabana Bay could easily rank higher.

It has family suites, a winding river, a bowling alley, and direct walking access to Volcano Bay. It also has enough personality that staying there still feels like part of the Universal vacation rather than simply booking a less expensive room.

At No. 5 is Universal Helios Grand Hotel.

Helios offers something completely different. The hotel sits at Epic Universe and has a dedicated entrance into the theme park for guests with valid admission.

That's an enormous convenience if you're building your vacation around Epic Universe.

But convenience comes with a price, and Helios doesn't include the Express Unlimited benefit offered at three of Universal's other high-end hotels.

Where the Expensive Hotels Fight Back

Royal Pacific Resort ranks No. 4.

Here's where comparing nightly rates alone can become misleading.

Royal Pacific includes Universal Express Unlimited at participating attractions at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure for hotel guests with valid admission.

Hard Rock Hotel and Portofino Bay include the same perk.

For a family already planning to purchase Express, that benefit can dramatically change the math. A more expensive room might suddenly represent better overall value.

Sapphire Falls takes No. 3 despite not including Express Unlimited.

Why?

We've seen Sapphire Falls fall below $180 per night during certain periods.

When that happens, you're getting a Signature Collection resort with amenities such as Universal's largest hotel pool and water taxi transportation to CityWalk for a price that can get surprisingly close to Universal's cheaper properties.

That's a combination we really like.

Our Top Two

Hard Rock Hotel takes No. 2.

Its location near Universal Studios Florida is fantastic, and Express Unlimited makes the hotel especially attractive for park-focused vacations.

Portofino Bay Hotel takes No. 1.

If we're judging purely on the overall resort experience, Portofino is incredibly difficult to beat.

It offers three resort-style pools, more extensive dining options, water taxi transportation, and Express Unlimited at participating Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure attractions.

The catch is exactly what you'd expect.

You're paying for it.

So, Where Does Your Money Go Furthest?

Our ranking puts Portofino Bay first, followed by Hard Rock, Sapphire Falls, Royal Pacific, Helios Grand, Cabana Bay, Aventura, Surfside, Dockside, Stella Nova, and Terra Luna.

But there's another ranking every family should create: price for their actual travel dates.

Universal hotel rates can change dramatically depending on when you visit. Halloween Horror Nights, holidays, school breaks, and other high-demand periods can push prices considerably higher.

During slower periods, the situation can reverse.

Sapphire Falls can occasionally appear below $180 per night, while Universal's budget hotels can sometimes land around or just above $100.

Imagine saving $100 or $200 per night across a five-night vacation. Suddenly you're talking about hundreds of dollars that can stay in your pocket.

Families can also look at suites at Cabana Bay, Surfside, and Dockside rather than automatically assuming an expensive hotel will provide the best experience.

There is one major exception.

Always price out Express Unlimited before choosing.

If you were going to purchase Express anyway, Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, or Royal Pacific could become much more financially attractive because the hotel stay includes Express Unlimited at participating attractions at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

If you don't care about Express, however, the calculation changes.

You won't beat the water taxi convenience and expanded amenities of Universal's best hotels.

But if your goal is spending most of your day riding attractions rather than hanging around the resort, paying substantially less for your room might be the better use of your vacation budget.

Sometimes the Universal hotel that gives you the most isn't the one with the most amenities.

It's the one that leaves the most money in your wallet.

Andrew Boardwine

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
