Spending big on a custom lightsaber is part of the deal for Star Wars fans who walk into Savi’s Workshop at Disney World.
The experience inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios goes beyond picking something off a merchandise shelf. Guests choose individual components and assemble a lightsaber that reflects their preferences.
That makes any major update worth watching, especially for fans deciding whether the price is worth it.
Disney has now refreshed one of the available lightsaber themes while introducing upgraded technology that affects how the finished product looks, sounds, and behaves.
For first-time builders, those additions offer more for the investment. For returning guests, Disney has created something noticeably different.
Protection & Defense Gets a New Look
Protection & Defense has reached its third generation at Savi’s Workshop with a dramatically different appearance.
The V3 collection draws inspiration from the High Republic era and the Jedi Order. While the previous version relied heavily on silver, the latest components feature considerably more white and yellow-gold.
Disney still gives guests plenty of control over the finished product.
Builders can choose from 10 components: two emitters, four sleeves, two switches, and two pommels. Each guest selects one emitter, two sleeves, one switch, and one pommel.
That customization remains a major part of what separates Savi’s Workshop from simply purchasing a finished lightsaber.

Builders Have Plenty of New Pieces to Choose From
Disney packed the collection with details that give guests different ways to personalize their build.
The sleeves feature white-and-gold designs and imagery tied to the High Republic. One switch takes a cleaner approach, while the other uses more elaborate gold details.
Guests will find a similar variety with the pommels. One balances white with decorative gold elements, while another leans heavily into gold with white accents.
The emitters also borrow ideas from the original Protection & Defense collection while giving those concepts an updated appearance.
Power & Control received its own V3 update earlier in 2026, but redesigned pieces only tell part of the story.
Disney Upgrades the Lightsabers Themselves
The latest Savi’s Workshop update goes beyond appearance.
Disney has upgraded the chassis and blade technology with effects designed to make the finished lightsabers feel more like the weapons fans know from Star Wars.
The enhanced system features thermal-cutting, spinning, and deflection effects. Disney has also upgraded the audio and created smoother blade activation.
Rare cracked Kyber crystals add another interactive feature.
With compatible crystals, the system can switch the blade between blue and red. Owners can trigger the change with a quick wrist movement.
Those improvements could become especially important for repeat builders. A newer lightsaber doesn't simply look different from an older version. It can also offer technology that previous Savi’s Workshop builds didn't have.

The Upgrades Could Make the Cost Easier to Accept
Savi’s Workshop won't make sense for every Disney World visitor.
Guests who simply want a lightsaber may not see enough value in paying for the entire building experience. For many Star Wars fans, however, customization and immersion are major parts of the appeal.
Someone who previously built a Protection & Defense lightsaber will encounter an entirely different group of components. Pair those pieces with upgraded sound, activation, and blade effects, and another build can feel significantly different.
For collectors, that difference could make it easier to justify spending money on another custom lightsaber.

Star Wars Fans Can Keep Exploring After Their Build
Savi’s Workshop is only one piece of the larger Star Wars experience at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Inside Galaxy’s Edge, guests can visit Oga’s Cantina, drink Blue Milk, encounter characters, and explore Black Spire Outpost. Fans can also see the Millennium Falcon, X-wing and A-wing starfighters, and First Order TIE Echelon.
Guests can experience Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance or step into the cockpit aboard Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. Elsewhere at Hollywood Studios, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue provides another Star Wars attraction.
Building a lightsaber remains one of the more expensive ways to bring part of that experience home.
With a refreshed Protection & Defense collection and upgraded technology, though, Disney has given fans more for that investment — and repeat builders another reason to return.
