Character interactions are a crucial part of Walt Disney World vacations, especially when guests finally come face-to-face with someone they've watched for years.
But finding a favorite character isn't always guaranteed.
Disney regularly updates its entertainment offerings, and familiar faces can disappear as attractions close, shows end, or different characters take their place. In some cases, characters who once had a regular presence haven't returned at all.
That's the case for six familiar characters who once appeared across Disney World's theme parks. From Disney Junior favorites to characters connected to former Magic Kingdom experiences, none remain part of the regular lineup today.
Disney Junior Leaves Two Characters Behind
Disney's Hollywood Studios once offered younger guests several opportunities to interact with Disney Junior characters.
Doc McStuffins became one of those familiar faces. Beyond appearing in Disney Junior entertainment, Doc joined the park's character lineup, allowing children who watched the animated series to see her in person.
Vampirina also became part of that presence. Her spooky yet kid-friendly personality helped her stand out from the princesses and classic Disney characters elsewhere in the resort.
Eventually, Disney began overhauling its Disney Junior offerings at Hollywood Studios.
The park moved forward with Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!, a new stage production featuring Mickey Mouse and other current Disney Junior characters. As Disney updated the area and its entertainment lineup, Doc McStuffins and Vampirina disappeared from regular appearances.
Neither character currently maintains the Hollywood Studios presence they once had.

Animal Kingdom Removes Two Brothers
Two other characters disappeared together at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Kenai and Koda from Brother Bear (2003) once appeared at the park, allowing fans of the animated movie to encounter characters who have never enjoyed the widespread theme park representation of some larger Disney franchises.
Their Animal Kingdom appearances also made sense, considering the movie's connection to animals and nature.
But Kenai and Koda eventually vanished from the regular lineup.
Today, neither character regularly appears at Disney's Animal Kingdom. That has also left Brother Bear with very little representation inside Disney World's theme parks.
Characters without regular appearances can become particularly difficult to find, sometimes leaving fans waiting years for another opportunity to encounter them.

Controversial Ride and Character Removed Together
Br'er Rabbit's disappearance came under very different circumstances.
For decades, the character played an important role inside Splash Mountain at Magic Kingdom. Guests followed his adventure throughout the attraction before reaching its famous final drop.
That presence ended when Disney permanently closed Splash Mountain in January 2023 ahead of its transformation into Tiana's Bayou Adventure.
The new attraction opened in 2024 with a different story and character lineups inspired by The Princess and the Frog (2009).
Br'er Rabbit's longtime role inside Magic Kingdom therefore ended alongside the attraction most closely associated with him.
While some characters simply disappeared from scheduled appearances, his removal became part of a much larger change to the park.

A Magic Kingdom Classic Disappears
Merlin also once had a memorable presence at Magic Kingdom, although his role looked very different.
During the Sword in the Stone ceremony, guests gathered around the famous sword in Fantasyland as Merlin selected participants to try pulling it from the stone.
The small performance gave visitors an unexpected opportunity to become part of the entertainment themselves.
When Disney discontinued the ceremony, Merlin's regular live appearances connected to it ended. Although he remained connected to other Disney World experiences afterward, he no longer maintained a regular presence in Fantasyland.
Merlin reportedly surfaced again in September 2026 during a special character gathering celebrating the grand opening of The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
That rare appearance didn't signal a permanent return.
Merlin still isn't a regularly scheduled meet-and-greet character, and Disney hasn't announced plans to bring back the Sword in the Stone ceremony.

Six Familiar Faces Remain Missing
Disney World's character lineup has never remained frozen in time. Movies, television shows, attractions, entertainment changes, and park projects can all influence which characters guests encounter.
Doc McStuffins, Vampirina, Kenai, Koda, Br'er Rabbit, and Merlin each represent a different chapter of that history.
Some lost their regular appearances when Disney changed the entertainment surrounding them. Others disappeared as larger attractions and experiences went away.
For longtime guests who remember seeing these characters in the parks, their absence can be noticeable.
And for anyone hoping to meet one of them on an upcoming vacation, there's currently no regular opportunity to do so.
