After 44 Years of Magic, Spaceship Earth Entrance Architecture Changed at EPCOT

Guests arriving at EPCOT's iconic geodesic sphere on Thursday found the front door shut with no explanation. Walt Disney World Resort closed the main entrance to Spaceship Earth on October 22 and rerouted riders to a temporary way in.

When Disney Park guests reached the World Celebration neighborhood on October 22, both the standby and Lightning Lane queue entrances to the attraction were closed and blocked off with stanchions. Posted signs and cast members sent visitors toward an alternate entrance on the side of the building, closer to Project Tomorrow, the interactive area at the ride's exit.

X (formerly known as Twitter) user @laughingplace documented the setup, writing:

A cast member stationed at that temporary entrance used a portable device to scan guests' Lightning Lane access. Walt Disney World Resort hasn't explained why the main entrance was closed, and it made no announcement beforehand.

A Bigger Change on the Calendar

The entrance closure may turn out to be a small detail in a much larger story. At D23 Expo 2026, Walt Disney World Resort announced plans to reimagine the inside of Spaceship Earth with a focus on human connection. The futuristic, innovation-focused dark ride was originally slated for an overhaul in 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic led to delays, and the project was shelved indefinitely.

Disney hasn't said when the attraction will close for the work, and it has shared little about the new storyline. It also remains unclear whether Dame Judi Dench, who currently narrates the ride, will return for the updated version. Whether Thursday's entrance closure is connected to the upcoming overhaul hasn't been confirmed.

What Guests Should Know

For now, the ride appears to be operating through its side entrance. Visitors planning to ride Spaceship Earth should look for the posted signs near the main doors and follow cast member directions to the temporary entry point, especially if they have Lightning Lane access.
