Disney is giving a second chance to a Star Wars movie that many fans thought the company had left behind.
The film arrived with familiar characters and plenty of expectations. Unfortunately, its theatrical performance didn't deliver the success Disney wanted.
For years, there was little reason to believe the story would receive a follow-up.
Now, eight years later, Lucasfilm has confirmed those characters are returning. However, fans hoping for another big-screen adventure might be surprised.
Disney's Star Wars Gamble Became an Expensive Disappointment
In 2018, Disney released Solo: A Star Wars Story, hoping audiences would embrace a new chapter in Han Solo's history.
Alden Ehrenreich played the younger Han, taking over the character Harrison Ford made famous. Donald Glover joined as Lando Calrissian, while Emilia Clarke portrayed Qi'ra.
The movie explored Han's relationship with Chewbacca and his first encounter with the Millennium Falcon.
Despite those familiar connections, the film struggled financially.
Solo earned roughly $393 million worldwide, but its reported production budget was close to $300 million. Marketing expenses and theaters' portions of ticket sales made the results even more disappointing.
The production also experienced difficulties.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller originally directed the project but departed during filming. Ron Howard took over and completed the movie.
Although some fans enjoyed the finished product, Disney never moved forward with an immediate theatrical sequel.

An Unexpected Announcement Brings the Story Back
Lucasfilm addressed that unfinished chapter during New York Comic-Con 2026, confirming that Solo: A Star Wars Story would receive an official continuation.
But there's a catch.
Rather than producing another movie, Disney is bringing the characters back through a comic titled Star Wars: Smugglers & Scoundrels – The Black Sun Eclipse.
The story takes place two years after Solo and reunites Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian.
Unfortunately, their latest problem involves money.
They owe a debt to Black Sun, a dangerous criminal organization. Han believes he can find a solution, but an approaching eclipse threatens to interfere with his plans.
Adam Lance Garcia is writing the comic, while Liana Kangas is handling the artwork.
Mad Cave Studios will release the project through its Papercutz label in fall 2027.
Although this isn't the theatrical reunion some fans wanted, it represents the first official sequel to the film's story in comic book form.

The Future of Han and Lando Remains Uncertain
The announcement arrives as Lucasfilm begins a new era under Dave Filoni's leadership.
However, Disney hasn't announced plans to bring Alden Ehrenreich back for another Solo movie.
Questions also remain about Donald Glover's proposed Lando Calrissian spinoff.
The project originally began as a Disney+ series before transitioning toward a theatrical film. Glover remains connected, but Disney hasn't announced a release date.
For now, the comic offers a way to continue exploring these characters without producing another major movie.
It also raises questions about Disney's other unfinished Star Wars stories.
Could Disney Bring Back More Canceled Stories?
Solo isn't the only Star Wars production that left audiences wondering what might happen next.
Disney has introduced several characters through its streaming shows, but not all have received additional seasons.
Obi-Wan Kenobi remains without a confirmed second season, even though Ewan McGregor has expressed interest in returning.
Meanwhile, The Book of Boba Fett received mixed reactions and left opportunities for more adventures.
Disney also canceled The Acolyte after its first season, while Skeleton Crew hasn't received a second-season announcement.
Comics and novels could provide another way to continue those stories without producing additional television seasons.
Lucasfilm hasn't announced plans to release sequels to these shows, but the Solo decision suggests another possibility.

Another Star Wars Movie Is Already on the Way
While Disney brings Han Solo back through comics, the company is preparing another theatrical adventure.
Star Wars: Starfighter (2027) arrives May 28, 2027, with Ryan Gosling leading the cast.
Shawn Levy is directing the movie, which takes place approximately five years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
Gosling plays Kade Auberon, a mysterious character whose past becomes part of a dangerous adventure.
Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, and Aaron Pierre also appear in the film.
Unlike the Solo comic, Starfighter focuses on an original storyline rather than continuing an established character's adventures.
For fans who have waited years to see what happened after Solo, the comic finally offers an answer.
Disney still hasn't promised another movie, but Han Solo's story isn't finished just yet.
