Disneyland Resort Sets Opening Date for Buzz Lightyear Attraction Replacement

Official Expansion Confirmed

Tokyo Disneyland’s Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue will open April 15, 2027, bringing the first theme park attraction based on Wreck-It Ralph to Japan. Disney has also revealed how the interactive ride works, along with plans for a nearby shop, a new popcorn flavor and a countdown beginning in January.

For American fans, the announcement comes with a geographic reality: The first ride built around Ralph and Vanellope is headed to Tokyo Disney Resort, not Disneyland Resort in California or Walt Disney World in Florida.

Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue Replaces a Toy Story Ride

The attraction takes over the space formerly occupied by Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters, the interactive Toy Story ride that permanently closed at Tokyo Disneyland in October 2024. Inside the Magic previously covered the end of the attraction and plans for its replacement.

NEW: Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue officially opens April 15, 2027 at Tokyo Disneyland. The world’s first Wreck-It Ralph attraction will send guests into Sugar Rush to stop King Candy, using onboard scanners to turn “Sugar Bugs” back into candy while earning points along the way. This is a reimagining of an existing attraction, not a ground-up ride built on an empty site. It changes Buzz Lightyear’s mission into a trip inside the candy-themed racing game from Wreck-It Ralph.

According to the operator Oriental Land Company’s announcement, the opening falls on Tokyo Disneyland’s 44th anniversary. The company operates the resort under a Disney licensing agreement.

How the Wreck-It Ralph Ride Works

King Candy has transformed sweets into Sugar Bugs programmed to consume Sugar Rush. Guests join Ralph and Vanellope to restore the creatures to their original candy forms before the game world is overwhelmed, Disney Parks Blog says.

Riders use scanners installed in their vehicles, earning points based on the number and types of Sugar Bugs restored. Scores appear on screens aboard the vehicles and remain available in the Tokyo Disney Resort app for a limited time after the ride; attraction photos will also be available for purchase through the app.

The resort lists the experience as approximately four minutes long, with vehicles accommodating three people. Its attraction page notes loud sounds, darkness and spinning, details worth considering for families with younger children or guests sensitive to those effects.

The official attraction page currently lists a Standby Pass as required and paid Disney Premier Access as available. Oriental Land’s announcement says a free Standby Pass or paid Premier Access may be required, so guests should check the latest resort guidance when planning their visit.

A Shop and a New Popcorn Flavor

Pixel Prism, a shop beside the ride, opens April 15. Disney describes a digital marketplace with pixel-patterned floors, game-inspired designs and an illuminated structure at its entrance; merchandise will include plush, candy and toys inspired by the ride’s scanners.

A snack arrives earlier. Popping Station opens March 17 near Tomorrowland Plaza and will serve Sugar-Lime Popcorn, a sweet-and-tart flavor inspired by the attraction’s Sugar Bugs. Disney says the flavor will also be sold at popcorn wagons around Tokyo Disneyland.

Additional attraction-inspired menu items are planned at park restaurants. Food arrives before the ride opens. Previous Inside the Magic coverage identified the new shop as part of Tomorrowland’s wider transformation.

The Countdown Starts in January

Beginning January 12, 2027, a smartphone mini-game will let players prepare for the Sugar Rush mission. Disney says it can be played at home, with a special version incorporating park scenery available in select areas of Tokyo Disneyland.

Attraction-themed decorations and photo opportunities follow in Tomorrowland on February 18. Projections inspired by the ride are scheduled to begin at Cinderella Castle on March 18, giving visitors several ways to encounter the story before the attraction itself opens.

For travelers planning a spring trip, those dates matter: A visit before April 15 can include some of the surrounding entertainment and food, but the announced grand opening for the ride and shop comes later. Separate admission and any applicable access requirements should be checked with the resort.

What Tokyo’s Exclusive Means for U.S. Fans

The Tokyo opening gives the Wreck-It Ralph franchise a dedicated attraction that guests cannot experience at Disney’s American resorts. For someone hoping to ride it, the confirmed destination means a trip to Japan rather than a visit to Anaheim or Orlando.

That difference can be disappointing, but it doesn’t establish that Disney has neglected its U.S. parks. Disney’s domestic pipeline includes a planned Monsters, Inc. coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, as Inside the Magic has reported, and Tokyo’s project is a reworking of an existing ride rather than a newly built ride from the ground up.

Sugar Rush is also one piece of Tokyo’s larger Tomorrowland overhaul. Space Mountain Earthrise and the redesigned Tomorrowland Plaza are scheduled to follow, with shops and restaurants opening as they become ready; Inside the Magic has covered the Space Mountain project separately.

For now, April 15 is the date to watch for Ralph and Vanellope’s ride. Guests should monitor Tokyo Disney Resort for current access instructions and further details as the opening approaches.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
