Disney World Cuts ‘The Little Mermaid’ Attraction Hours

Some Magic Kingdom attractions are built to make you scream. Others are built to make you smile. Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid falls firmly in the second camp, and that makes it an easy pick for just about any family.

The ride arrived in 2012 with the New Fantasyland expansion. It takes its story straight from Disney's 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid, following Ariel from her treasure-filled grotto, through Sebastian's big musical number, past Ursula, and all the way to her happily ever after with Prince Eric.

The ride system is part of the charm. Guests settle into clamshell vehicles that glide along a continuously moving Omnimover track. No rushing, no big drops, just a relaxing trip through some of the most recognizable songs in the Disney catalog.

Because it is so easy to enjoy, it is also easy to push to the end of the day. It is the kind of ride that is tempting to save for a low-key wind-down after a full day of bigger thrills. On one evening this week, though, that plan will not work.

Walt Disney World has cut the hours for Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid on Thursday, November 5. The ride's official attraction page lists it running from 9:00am to 7:00pm.

That is a noticeable gap. Magic Kingdom is scheduled to stay open until 10:00pm that night, so the ride will be dark for the park's final three hours.

Why the change? Disney has not said. The attraction does not have a refurbishment on the calendar either, so for now, guests are left with only the new hours to plan around.

Some fans may remember this is not the first time Ariel's ride has had a quiet schedule shift in 2026.

On February 11, Under the Sea closed for an entire day. Much like this week's change, that closure appeared on Walt Disney World's operating calendar roughly a week beforehand. Disney did not explain what was being worked on then, either.

Two short, unexplained adjustments in one year may not mean much on their own, but they are worth knowing about if Ariel is high on your list.

Meanwhile, Over in Frontierland

Under the Sea is not the only Magic Kingdom attraction on an adjusted schedule right now. Tiana's Bayou Adventure shut down on November 2 for the first refurbishment in its history. The flume ride debuted in 2024.

The current Walt Disney World calendar shows Tiana returning on Friday, December 18. That timing would have the bayou back open one week before Christmas, though refurbishment dates are always subject to change.

Your Game Plan for Thursday

The early close only trims the evening. Most of the day is still fair game, and with a little planning, nobody has to miss out.

Start by thinking morning. Guests at eligible Disney Resort hotels can ride starting at 8:30am during Early Theme Park Entry, half an hour before Magic Kingdom opens to the public at 9:00am. Regular hours then run until the 7:00pm cutoff.

If you are traveling with small kids, Under the Sea is an especially good early stop. It has no height requirement, so the whole group can ride together, and getting it done before Fantasyland gets busy can make the rest of the day feel easier.

Using Lightning Lane? Make sure any return time you pick for Under the Sea lands before 7:00pm. A late-evening slot simply will not be usable on November 5.

And if you were counting on a nighttime ride to close out your visit, consider swapping in another Fantasyland favorite instead. The rest of the park keeps running until 10:00pm.

Kiss the Night Ride Goodbye (Just This Once)

It is a small change, but small changes are exactly the ones that sneak up on you mid-vacation. A quick look at the hours before you head to Fantasyland could save you from a disappointing walk up to a closed entrance.

We will keep an eye on the ride's schedule and pass along anything new.

So, quick question for our fellow Ariel fans. When do you usually ride Under the Sea, first thing in the morning or as your final ride of the night? Drop your answer in the comments. And if you have a favorite scene, we would love to hear it. Ours might just be Sebastian's big number.
