Epic Universe Expansion Revealed in Aerial Photo as Dark Universe Set To Lose Ride Next Month

Concrete is in the ground at Universal Orlando Resort’s Epic Universe, and new overhead photos show the next chapter of Dark Universe taking shape beside one of the park’s most popular attractions.

Universal recently confirmed that an indoor roller coaster is coming to the monster-themed land, right next to Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment. The company has revealed little so far. There is no word yet on theming, ride system, or opening date, though Universal’s official X account offered a brief update: “Construction is underway, with an opening planned in the years ahead.”

What the Aerial Images Reveal

On November 6, Bioreconstruct, a well-known account that documents theme park construction in Central Florida, posted a new batch of aerial photos from the site.

The first pair of images focuses on work in Dark Universe connected to access for the new coaster. Bioreconstruct noted that sand from nearby excavations is being stored on the site for now. The shots also show a trailer area built before Epic Universe opened, and the account suggested that space looks set to stay as an expansion pad.

A separate photo shows the far end of the show building. According to Bioreconstruct, crews there have recently poured concrete for the foundations of an exterior wall. Groundwork is also visible for an attraction foundation, and another section of the site set aside for the ride is starting to develop. Cleared land and heavy equipment stretch across the area, just past the gothic rooftops of Frankenstein Manor.

These details come from an unofficial observer, and Universal has not shared any information about the size or layout of the coaster.

Monsters Unchained Closing in December

The construction news arrives as Dark Universe’s headline ride prepares for a brief pause. Universal’s official website lists Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment as closed from December 11 through December 15, 2026. No explanation has been given.

The attraction has been the land’s centerpiece since Epic Universe opened in May 2025. It sends riders through Frankenstein Manor while Dr. Victoria Frankenstein attempts to control Universal’s classic monsters. Guests in the park during the closure can still ride Curse of the Werewolf, the family spinning coaster in the village of Darkmoor, or visit the Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience, Das Stakehaus, and the Burning Blade Tavern.

Fyre Drill Also Going Down

Over in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, Fyre Drill is scheduled to close November 9 and 10, 2026. A longer closure will follow from January 25 through February 4, 2027. Universal’s official closures page is the most reliable resource for anyone planning a trip around these dates.

The Bigger Picture

A second major coaster in Dark Universe could ease pressure on a park that has struggled to keep up with crowds. Comcast reported that Universal’s theme parks brought in $2.6 billion in the third quarter of 2026, down 4.4% from the same period a year earlier.

CFO Jason Armstrong attributed part of that dip to softer demand over the summer. Co-CEO Mike Cavanagh went further, admitting that rivals such as Disney “were quicker to anticipate and recognize softness in demand” and responded accordingly. Cavanagh also pointed to “capacity challenges” at Epic Universe. That makes more ride capacity in a high-traffic land a logical priority.
