A-List Cast Joins ‘Pirates’ Star Johnny Depp for Hollywood Movie

Few modern movie stars have experienced a career arc as turbulent as Johnny Depp’s. After decades as a defining presence in blockbuster cinema, his off-screen life overtook his work in the public imagination. Courtroom proceedings, viral moments, and relentless media coverage reframed his reputation, leaving studios cautious and audiences split.

That shift had tangible consequences. Major franchises adjusted course, and Depp’s signature turn as Captain Jack Sparrow was left behind as The Walt Disney Company seemingly retooled Pirates of the Caribbean without him. Even when the legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard ended, the fallout lingered, making any new role feel symbolically loaded.

Now, Depp is attaching himself to a story almost everyone knows. Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol marks his first major studio-backed ensemble in years, with the actor taking on Ebenezer Scrooge in a darker reimagining of Dickens’ classic. Ti West directs, and Deadline confirms that Rupert Grint and Daisy Ridley have joined the cast, adding mainstream recognition to an already impressive lineup.

Grint steps into the role of Bob Cratchit, while Ridley’s character remains undisclosed. They join Andrea Riseborough, Sir Ian McKellen, Tramell Tillman, Sam Claflin, Charlie Murphy, Arthur Conti, and Ellie Bamber in what appears to be a deliberately elevated approach to the oft-adapted holiday story.

Scheduled for release on November 13, 2026, through Paramount Pictures, the film aims to stand apart from more traditional versions of A Christmas Carol. Its tonal shift and casting choices suggest a version less focused on comfort viewing and more on atmosphere and character. For Depp, it’s a visible step back into Hollywood’s inner circle after years on the periphery.

That move contrasts sharply with the quieter life he previously described embracing.

Speaking to Somerset Life in 2023, the actor detailed why he has chosen to spend his time on his 850-acre, £13 million mansion in the south of England. Depp said: “I just love places with character. British people are cool and will greet you as if you are a neighbour — without going over the top. I like going to places, seeing things and meeting people — but I’m not the great extrovert that people think.”

The film star added, “In truth, I’m quite a shy person. That’s one of the great things about Britain, and especially Somerset. I can just be me — and that’s nice. I can go into shops without being surrounded by people wanting selfies. I don’t mind that up to a point, but sometimes it gets a little too crowded.”

Until now, Depp’s post-trial work has largely existed outside major Hollywood ecosystems, including Minamata, Jeanne du Barry, Johnny Puff: Secret Mission, and his own directorial effort, Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness. His upcoming appearance in Day Drinker (2026) continues that gradual return.

With Paramount backing Ebenezer and an A-list ensemble signing on, industry attitudes may be shifting. Whether that opens doors back at Disney—and reignites speculation about Jack Sparrow—remains an open question.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
