Lucasfilm has released the first full trailer for Maul – Shadow Lord, offering a proper look at the upcoming animated Star Wars series set to debut on Disney+ later this year.
The trailer expands on the ominous teaser shown at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Tokyo, giving us new footage of Maul navigating the criminal underworld after the fall of the Republic. It also shows a darker visual style than any previous animated Star Wars project:

Maul – Shadow Lord was officially announced on stage by Sam Witwer, who voices the character and previously portrayed him in The Clone Wars and Rebels. According to StarWars.com, the series is set “after the Clone Wars” and follows Maul as he attempts “to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire.”
This marks the character’s first on-screen appearance since the final season of The Clone Wars, where he escaped Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) during the chaos of Order 66.

Visually, Shadow Lord appears closely related to The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, and Tales of the Jedi, while still pushing into darker territory.
Witwer previously told CinemaBlend that the series would be “more edgy and jagged and dangerous,” adding that it would embrace “a little bit more extreme” storytelling to reflect Maul’s bleak mindset.
Ahead of the show’s release, Marvel Comics will publish a five-issue prequel miniseries titled Shadow of Maul, written by Benjamin Percy with art by Madibek Musabekov. The comic is scheduled to launch in March and will bridge the gap between Maul’s last appearance in The Clone Wars and the events of the new series.
Ahsoka herself is set to return in Season 2 of the live-action Disney+ series later this year.
Shadow Lord will premiere on Disney+ on April 6.
