Hawkins, Indiana, has never been a quiet place, but the latest wave of Stranger Things content is proving just how far the Upside Down's tendrils can reach.
Since the flagship series' Netflix debut in 2016, the series has grown into a cultural phenomenon, following characters like Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin), and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) as they uncovered sinister government experiments and monstrous creatures lurking in the Upside Down.
Over the years, the franchise has grown beyond the screen, inspiring comic books, novels, merchandise, games, and even a stage adaptation, Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
Now, with the first four episodes of Season 5 finally streaming on Netflix, fans are reconnecting with their favorite characters one last time. While the story is far from over — volumes 2 and 3 are scheduled for December 25 and December 31, respectively — there’s already a new era of Stranger Things storytelling being ushered in.
One is an animated series titled Tales From '85, which is set to be released on the streaming giant next year. Another is the upcoming novel, “Stranger Things: One Way or Another”, written by Caitlin Schneider and releasing this week on December 2.
The new novel spotlights Nancy Wheeler (played by Natalia Dyer in the Netflix series) and Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) in a standalone mystery. According to Penguin Books, “Following the events of Stranger Things: Season 4, Nancy Wheeler and Robin Buckley are hot on the heels of a new mystery – and they won’t stop until they solve it.”
This release underscores how Stranger Things is fast evolving, despite the flagship show nearing its end. Beyond the Netflix series, the franchise is branching into an animated series, and now, even more novels. While fans await the next episodes of Season 5, “One Way or Another” will offer them a chance to explore Hawkins, and probably the Upside Down, through the lens of one of its most resourceful characters.
