Executive Reveals Disney’s Plans to Merge Fortnite and Disney Parks Experiences

At the 2025 South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, Bruce Vaughn, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Imagineering, revealed an exciting new chapter in Disney’s quest to merge the digital and physical realms of entertainment. “We are gonna have an opportunity for certain Guests to bridge those worlds, and share those worlds, and have a relationship between that,” Vaughn stated, hinting at the groundbreaking changes ahead for both Disney Parks and the world of gaming.

A New Era

This bold initiative is a result of Disney’s $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games, the creators of the popular game Fortnite, announced in February 2024. The partnership is set to create a unified, open, and interoperable entertainment universe that seamlessly integrates Disney’s vast array of iconic franchises—ranging from Marvel and Star Wars to Pixar and Avatar—into the Fortnite platform. The idea is to provide fans with new ways to play, watch, shop, and interact with Disney content, blurring the lines between digital gaming and physical experiences, with potential applications at Disney Parks.

While details are still under wraps, Vaughn and his team of Imagineers are exploring how Fortnite missions could influence the storylines within Disney parks. This immersive crossover would offer a dynamic interaction between the game world and real-world park attractions, allowing guests to experience a more personalized and engaging Disney visit.

The key here is not merely adding digital elements to physical spaces, but creating an entirely cohesive ecosystem where stories and experiences transcend platforms. Guests could embark on a Fortnite mission, which might later unlock special events, rewards, or exclusive access to attractions within the parks, strengthening the connection between the two environments.

The Future of Fortnite and Disney

Disney’s foray into this interconnected universe is a significant step in the company’s broader strategy to redefine storytelling. The collaboration with Epic Games is an important part of this evolution, offering fans new ways to engage with their favorite characters and worlds in both digital and physical spaces.

Though timelines remain unclear, this innovation marks the beginning of a future where gaming and theme park experiences coexist in ways never before seen. Disney’s bold vision promises to redefine how audiences interact with entertainment, offering a glimpse into a future where the digital and physical worlds come together in seamless harmony. As Disney continues to explore these possibilities, the future of interactive storytelling seems more immersive than ever.
