A female celebrity is being questioned by authorities as part of a criminal investigation into the October 2023 death of actor Matthew Perry, and on Wednesday, her personal items, including her iPhone and her laptop, were seized by investigators.
Perry’s Death in Los Angeles
Matthew Perry was discovered in the jacuzzi at his home in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles on the afternoon of Saturday, October 28, 2023.
Paramedics were called to Perry’s residence at 18038 Blue Sail Drive just after 4:00 p.m. that day, and by that evening, news of the actor’s death by apparent drowning spread like wildfire across social media outlets and served as the story behind the headlines in the evening’s breaking news bits.
Los Angeles Police officers reportedly found no drugs at the scene during the initial death investigation, and no foul play was suspected.
While they were relieved that there were no signs of foul play, friends and fans of the late actor began to wonder if they should suspect that other things played a role in his passing, considering Perry had been open about his struggles with alcohol addiction and substance abuse over the years.
That evening, Warner Bros. Media released a statement in response to Perry’s death, saying:
Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. Television Group family. The impact of his comedic genius was felt around the world, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of so many. This is a heartbreaking day, and we send our love to his family, his loved ones, and all of his devoted fans.
Perry’s Autopsy Is Deferred
On October 29, an autopsy was performed to determine the cause of Perry’s death.
But rather than creating more clarity about the circumstances surrounding his passing, initial autopsy results were deemed inconclusive, serving to create more questions about his seemingly untimely death. Shortly thereafter, Perry’s death was labeled deferred, indicating that the L.A. County Medical Examiner could not conclusively determine the cause of Perry’s death.
Perry’s Autopsy Report Is Finally Released
In December, Matthew Perry’s autopsy results were finally revealed. Per the report, Perry’s death was ruled accidental and was attributed to several things. Per CNN:
The report, released Friday by the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office, shows Perry’s blood tested positive for ketamine, which is known to treat depression and anxiety.
“At the high levels of ketamine found in his postmortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression.”
The report continued, stating that the late actor had been receiving ketamine treatments in an effort to treat his severe anxiety and depression. But it’s worth noting that the amount of ketamine found in Perry’s system exceeded the amount that should be typically present, given the time that had elapsed since Perry’s last treatment.
The report further explains that ketamine has medical and surgical uses as an anesthetic and is also known as a recreational drug “mainly due to its ‘dissociative’ nature, indicating disconnection of mind and body. It can also have short duration hallucinatory and psychedelic effects.”
Perry’s last known treatment was a week and a half prior to his death, the autopsy states, well beyond the time it would still be in his system from the treatment.
Perry’s death came on the heels of an urgent warning from the United States Food & Drug Administration about the dangers associated with the use of ketamine.
In January 2024, authorities released what appeared to be a final statement about Perry’s death, confirming that the medical examiner’s case concerning an investigation into the death of Matthew Perry was considered complete. As such, the case was closed.
A Criminal Investigation Into Perry’s Death is Launched
But in May 2024, the Los Angeles Police Department announced the opening of a joint criminal investigation into the late actor’s death along with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
Now, a known celebrity has been questioned by authorities in connection with Matthew Perry’s death, and according to a report published on June 19, the female celebrity has been brought in for questioning by law enforcement multiple times following the LAPD’s launch of a criminal investigation into Perry’s death.
The celebrity, whose identity is known by the media outlet In Touch but is being concealed because the investigation is ongoing, had her iPhone and her laptop seized by investigators on Wednesday.
A Person of Interest is Questioned & Has Personal Items Seized
According to the outlet, “authorities have been on the hunt [to learn] how [Perry] received the supply of ketamine that ultimately killed him.” The report continues, stating the following:
When law enforcement arrived with a search warrant at the woman’s sober living residence in Los Angeles, she was out exercising and not present. However, when she returned, “she was completely cooperative,” a source tells “In Touch.”
As officers searched her room, they took an iPhone and computer, the source reveals, adding that the woman “surrendered everything.”
The report also notes that the female in question was not handcuffed or arrested, but it bears repeating that law enforcement was able to secure a search warrant in the case.
As this is a developing story, more information will be shared as it becomes available.
