Confirmed: Disneyland Sets Closure Date for Historic Attraction

Disneyland just dropped two Frontierland dates, and if you have a September trip, you need both of them.

Here is the situation.

Look, planning a Disneyland day is harder than it has any right to be. You have to know what is open, what is buried behind construction walls, what is gone permanently, and what is about to come back. Miss one detail and you are hauling your family across the park toward a scrim. It happens constantly, usually to people who booked months out and never circled back to check.

Frontierland is the worst about this. Riverboat, canoes, sailing ship, Tom Sawyer Island, all the little stuff around the edges. Something is always rotating out. Sometimes four days. Sometimes longer. Disney is not always generous with the warning.

So here is what landed today.

The Disneyland Shutdown

Mark Twain Riverboat closes temporarily on September 8, 2026.

Disneyland has stated that it will reopen September 12, 2026, hopefully with the current operating hours of 9 a.m. to 5:40 p.m, but that could change.

Four days. Short enough that it reads like routine maintenance rather than anything serious. But if that is your park day, plan around it.

The Reopening

Frontierland Shootin' Exposition comes back September 11, 2026.

That one has been dark since July 6, so we are talking a refurbishment of north of two months. And weirdly, not much has been visible from outside beyond some themed scrims going up. Whatever got fixed, they kept quiet about it.

Stack the dates, and you get an odd little window. Shootin' Exposition returns on the 11th. Mark Twain returns on the 12th. Early September, Frontierland is running light. Then everything is back within 24 hours of each other.

What the Shootin' Exposition Actually Is at Disneyland

Never wandered in? It is one of the more old-school things left in the park, and it is genuinely fun.

You step up to a rustic log cabin and shoulder a replica .54-caliber Hawkins buffalo rifle. Look down the scope, and you are staring at legendary Boot Hill in Tombstone, Arizona.

Nearly 100 interactive targets, moving and stationary. Land a hit, and you get lights, sounds, and animations. Some of those animations have a supernatural twist, which is the part people come back for.

Heads up, this one costs extra. You buy credits to play. One credit runs you about 25 shots, and you can grab more.

On safety, the rifles do not fire pellets or projectiles of any kind. Invisible beams of safe infrared light. Beam hits a sensor on the target, hit registers.

No height requirement.

Why the Mark Twain Is Worth Fourteen Minutes

The Mark Twain is an authentic reproduction of the boats that once worked the Mississippi. A real steam engine converts water from the Rivers of America into steam, and that steam drives the paddle, pushing the boat.

Fourteen minutes, half a mile, circling Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island with narration the whole way.

Things to look for: the north bank of the Columbia Gorge with a waterfront and five waterfalls, a rustic frontier cabin, an idyllic Native American village, a busy beaver gnawing on the train trestle, mountain lions stretched out in the sun, and the Disneyland Railroad steaming off into the wilderness.

The boat itself is a piece of work. Twenty-eight feet tall, 105 feet long, four decks, wood craftsmanship detailed to a level most guests never stop to notice.

Pilothouse on top with the wheelhouse and Captain's Quarters. Promenade Deck with a salon plus vintage photos and maps. Texas Deck, sometimes called the Sun Deck, is for being outside. Main Deck holding the boiler and pistons that run the paddlewheel.

Seating is limited. No height requirement.

The Name Is a Walt Thing

Small detail, good story.

Walt named it after the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, who wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and happened to be one of Walt's personal heroes.

Clemens piloted riverboats when he was young, and the job handed him his pen name. “Mark twain” is a boating term meaning the vessel is sitting at a safe depth.

Stuck There September 8 to 12

You are not out of luck on the Rivers of America.

The Mark Twain shares its route with Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes and the Sailing Ship Columbia. Different ride, same water, same loop around Tom Sawyer Island.

Check the schedules, though. Neither one runs every single day.

Write These Down

September 8 through 12, the Mark Twain Riverboat is out.

September 11, Frontierland Shootin' Exposition is back after two months.

Booked for early September? That is a tight window where Frontierland is not firing on all cylinders, but it resolves quickly. Show up September 12 or later, and you get everything.

We will keep tracking Disneyland Resort refurbishments and closures, because that list changes constantly, and it is always worth one more check before you head out.
