Star Wars fans have plenty to look forward to as Disney prepares for the franchise's 50th anniversary, but an unexpected announcement has brought one of its original stars back into the spotlight.
Disney and Lucasfilm have confirmed that a familiar performer from the 1977 movie will return for another project. While the actor has remained connected to Star Wars for decades, his latest appearance won't look anything like his previous adventures.
Instead of another theatrical release or traditional Disney+ series, the character will participate in a special event that combines two very different entertainment worlds.
And Disney is bringing another legendary Star Wars character along for the ride.
Disney Officially Brings Back Original Star Wars Star
Anthony Daniels, who first played C-3PO in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), is returning to voice the beloved protocol droid.
Daniels has remained a familiar presence throughout the franchise's history, appearing in every theatrically released Star Wars film.
That includes The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026), although the actor received credit for a different droid character rather than C-3PO.
Now, nearly 50 years after his first appearance, Daniels is taking the character into unfamiliar territory.
Disney has partnered with ESPN, Lucasfilm, and the NFL to create Star Wars Funday Football, an animated alternative presentation of Super Bowl LXI.
The event will bring the championship game into an animated Star Wars environment, giving viewers a different way to experience professional football.
Daniels has already recorded new dialogue for the presentation, confirming that audiences will hear C-3PO's familiar voice once again.
However, Disney isn't waiting until the championship to introduce the unusual collaboration.

C-3PO and R2-D2 Reunite in New Disney Teaser
Disney has released promotional footage featuring C-3PO alongside his longtime companion, R2-D2.
The teaser draws inspiration from Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), recreating the droids' arrival on a desert planet in an escape pod.
As they make their way through the unfamiliar surroundings, R2-D2 begins communicating through his signature electronic sounds.
C-3PO soon realizes their destination has something to do with the Super Bowl.
Rather than expressing his usual concerns about their situation, the golden droid enthusiastically announces that he's ready for football.
It's an unusual moment for a character traditionally associated with galactic conflicts, dangerous missions, and constant worry.
Still, Daniels' recognizable performance gives the promotional footage a familiar connection to the original films.
And the crossover represents a major milestone for ESPN's animated sports programming.

Star Wars Will Make Super Bowl History in February
ESPN has produced several animated football presentations, but Star Wars Funday Football will become the first installment centered on the Super Bowl.
The concept began in October 2023 with Toy Story Funday Football, which transformed a game between the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars into an animated experience inspired by Pixar.
The presentation later received three Sports Emmy Awards.
ESPN expanded the format in December 2024 with The Simpsons Funday Football, featuring the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys.
The company continued the series in December 2025 with Monsters Funday Football, bringing the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Chargers into another animated environment.
Now, the format is heading to the championship.
Super Bowl LXI takes place February 14, 2027, and the Star Wars presentation will run alongside the traditional game broadcast.
Viewers can access the animated version through Disney+, the ESPN App, Disney Channel, and Disney XD.
However, Disney's plans extend beyond C-3PO and the championship itself.

Disney Confirms Darth Vader's Return for Football Crossover
Darth Vader will also appear in promotional programming connected to Disney's football partnership.
Beginning October 26, the animated villain will interview NFL players on SC+, ESPN's SportsCenter program available through Disney+.
While Disney has confirmed Vader's participation, the company hasn't revealed who will provide his voice.
James Earl Jones, whose performance became synonymous with Darth Vader, died in 2024.
Before his death, arrangements were made to recreate his voice through artificial intelligence for future Star Wars appearances.
Similar technology was previously used to bring Darth Vader into Fortnite.
However, Disney hasn't confirmed whether it will use AI technology for the upcoming football interviews.
That question remains unanswered as the promotional campaign approaches.

Disney Prepares More Star Wars Projects for 2027
The football presentation is only one part of Disney's plans as Star Wars approaches its 50th anniversary.
Lucasfilm is preparing Season 2 of Ahsoka, continuing Rosario Dawson's story on Disney+.
Moviegoers can also look forward to Star Wars: Starfighter (2027), starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy. The film is scheduled to arrive May 28.
Meanwhile, Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) will return to theaters February 19, allowing audiences to revisit the adventure that started everything.
These projects will give fans several ways to celebrate the franchise throughout 2027.
For Anthony Daniels, though, Star Wars Funday Football offers something particularly unusual: another chance to portray C-3PO in a setting far removed from the character's traditional adventures.
And nearly five decades after his debut, the actor is still finding new ways to bring the beloved droid to audiences.
