Disneyland guests hoping to race through the icy caverns of Matterhorn Bobsleds are currently being turned away from the mountain—but the interruption should be brief.
The Fantasyland attraction closed Monday, July 20, for a scheduled refurbishment. Disneyland currently plans to reopen the ride Friday, July 24, limiting the shutdown to four operating days. Until then, guests will find the queue chained off and the Lightning Lane stations covered with green tarps.
A sign at the entrance makes the closure clear: “Our bobsled runs are currently undergoing improvements. Please enjoy other Fantasyland attractions.”
That wording may sound promising, but Disneyland has not revealed what is being changed inside the mountain. “Improvements” should not be read as confirmation of new effects, smoother ride vehicles, altered scenes, or any other guest-facing upgrade.
Matterhorn Bobsleds Is Closed Through Thursday
The official Matterhorn Bobsleds webpage now displays no operating times and states that the attraction is “currently closed for refurbishment.”
Disneyland scheduled the attraction to remain unavailable from July 20 through July 23. Its return is set for July 24, although refurbishment dates can change if crews need additional time or an operational issue emerges.
For most summer visitors, this is a narrow disruption. Guests visiting Disneyland between Monday and Thursday lose access to one of the park’s most recognizable rides, while those arriving Friday or later should see it restored to the attraction lineup.
The closure’s physical appearance is arguably more dramatic than its duration. Chains, tarps, and an empty loading area can make a shutdown feel open-ended to someone encountering it without advance notice. In this case, however, Disneyland placed a reopening date on its calendar before the work began. Inside the Magic previously reported that the Matterhorn’s return had been scheduled for July 24.
Guests visiting during the closure should remove the attraction from their Lightning Lane plans and avoid waiting around the entrance for a same-day reopening. This is scheduled refurbishment downtime, not a temporary interruption expected to resolve later in the afternoon.
A Short Closure for a 67-Year-Old Roller Coaster
Four unavailable days is a relatively contained maintenance window for an attraction of Matterhorn Bobsleds’ age and complexity.
The ride opened on June 14, 1959, making it 67 years old. Disneyland identifies it as both the park’s first roller-coaster-style attraction and the first tubular-steel roller coaster in the world. No other Disney theme park has its own Matterhorn.
Its two separate tracks wind through the mountain from the Fantasyland and Tomorrowland sides. Guests board six-person bobsleds, climb into the structure, encounter the Abominable Snowman, and descend through caves, bridges, waterfalls, and an alpine splashdown.
That history is why even a four-day closure registers. Matterhorn Bobsleds is not simply another vehicle-based attraction temporarily removed from an app. Its 147-foot mountain remains visible across Disneyland while the experience inside is inaccessible—a conspicuous reminder of what visitors cannot ride.
Disneyland has performed more extensive Matterhorn projects before. In 2019, the attraction reopened following a longer refurbishment, while another closure in 2025 placed construction barriers around the mountain. The current work has not been described in comparable detail.
What Disneyland Has—and Has Not—Promised
Disneyland has confirmed that Matterhorn Bobsleds is closed for refurbishment. The on-site sign says the bobsled runs are undergoing improvements. Neither statement tells guests precisely what will be different Friday.
The short timeline suggests limited, targeted work rather than a sweeping reimagining, but that is an inference—not something Disneyland has confirmed. Visitors should expect the existing attraction to return unless the company announces otherwise.
