Disney Brings Back Virtual Queue in a Surprise Holiday Shakeup

Disney is shaking things up just in time for the holiday season. One of the most debated systems in the company’s history — the virtual queue — is officially coming back on November 13. But this time, it’s not for a thrill ride or a grand opening. It’s for one of the most beloved holiday traditions at Walt Disney World Resort.

A Holiday Favorite Gets a High-Tech Twist

Santa Claus is returning to Disney Springs, and the only way to meet him this year is through the virtual queue. Guests won’t be lining up for hours or staking out their spot early in the day. Instead, they’ll simply hop on the My Disney Experience app, grab a spot, and return when it’s their time to see Santa.

This is a big shift, especially since Santa meet-and-greets at Disney Springs have always been a first-come, first-served frenzy. With crowds expected to surge throughout November and December, this change is designed to keep the experience smoother and more manageable.

Here’s How It’ll Work

Santa will be greeting guests from November 13 through December 24 near Disney's Pin Traders. The virtual queue will open five times daily — at 9 AM, 11 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, and 6 PM. Guests must be on property at Disney Springs to join, but the process is simple: one person joins for the entire group, with a max of 10 guests per party.

Once your return time comes up, the app will send a notification along with a digital code. You can spend the rest of your day shopping, dining, or exploring the Christmas Tree Stroll, then return right on time for your holiday moment with Santa.

Why This Matters

Virtual queues have had mixed receptions over the years. Some guests love the convenience, while others find it stressful to secure a spot. But when it comes to holiday crowds, the system might just be the thing that keeps chaos at bay.

Various flags are flying atop the buildings, adding to the lively atmosphere at Disney World inside Magic Kingdom.

Santa meet-and-greets are extremely popular, and by controlling the flow through virtual queues, Disney can make the experience more enjoyable for everyone. It’s less waiting, more wandering, and a lot more holiday cheer.

The Bigger Picture

This holiday experiment might not be a one-off. Disney has used virtual queues in the past for big launches and special events, and its return now could signal a renewed interest in the system. As the parks continue to navigate massive holiday crowds, virtual queues could quietly become a regular part of the Disney experience again.

For now, it’s all about Santa. So if you’re heading to Disney Springs this season, get your phone ready. That magical photo with the man in red starts with a tap on the app.
